@jamesy @west coast angus We are all very disappointed at how it went. I can not understand why people do not catch on to Red's. As said on the Suckler cow thread they are a very good maternal breed, quiet, easy to handle, calve relatively easily, are good mothers. live cheap. There are several herds already in Scotland. They are spread fairly widely to, Isle of Mull to Aberdeenshire, Fife and to Brae in the Shetlands, so they must be fairly hardy.

Sorry to hear that @Wolds Beef, not read any reports yet, but did notice a top price of 6K, thought that was a good price?

I have had plenty of experience of Lincoln Red's and totally agree with what you say about the breed, I think the bottom line is, especially if your only using 1 bull is that the bullocks are hard to cash, and in today's climate no one can afford to be losing £200 per head for each bullock sold. But for bigger herds where they might have 30 heifers to bull, I think the Lincoln red could do this job brilliantly, easy calving and any females will make really good replacements killing two birds with one stone! Actually I hear there is a bull just joined a herd in fortwilliam for this very job.

Also as you say the society needs to be doing alot more!!

I have always been impressed with the Lincoln red cattle I have seen, and if the breed stays true to what it is, and not something it's not, it's day will come pretty soon I think(y)

Is it just reds prices that are down? Got s feeling the price in general for bulls will be down the way be beef job is and the uncertainty of brexit?
Limmy bulls were back £1200 decent clearance of 80% picked bulls sold ok but the rest seemed to struggle just a lack of money about just now and too much uncertainty!

Wouldnt be too worried about the limmys at stirling it's what happens at Carlisle for that breed that matters.

Charolais and Sims being the main event for Stirling .

The limmys at Stirling gives a better idea of the commercial demand than the Carlisle sale as generally not as many inflated priced breeders bulls bought by herds with with large budgets with money generated out with agriculture.

Every small (numerically ) breed needs to create a niche for itself so there is a demand from commercial men as well as the breed enthusiasts.
My experience is with Shorthorns. Dairy transformed themselves from being on the edge of extinsion to a breed that dairy farmers see as an alternative to high maintenance Holsteins.
The Beef breed was on the rare breeds watch list. Again transformed, A bit of luck & some shrewd negotiation got the interest of Morrisons, who pay a premium for Beef Shorthorn sired cattle. Hence the headline on here https://thefarmingforum.co.uk/index...f-shorthorn-bull-at-stirling-13000gns.271350/

Have to agree to disagree on this one, the majority oflim bulls that sell at Carlisle will be going to a commercial home ..
The best bulls folk have to offer will be at Carlisle too . Stirling is very much a satellite sale for the limousin breed, don't get me wrong people still pay good money for a bull there but if those same animals were at Carlisle would they sell as well

I agree. But the Live Web cam from Stirling is infinitely better than the stop-start fuzzy version from Carlisle.

The benefit of using a Limousin, apart from it being a superior breed in every respect, is that there is an enormous choice of well bred bulls. For example, at Carlisle, before the sale, make a note of which bulls you don't want to buy, and there will still be plenty available to buy at 2500 to 3000 gns.

The webcam is much much better,
I'd never say limousins are a superior breed to their continental cousins , for a few different reasons.. they can't grow or finish like a Charolais , I'm also lead to believe that calving is starting to become an issue with limousin , we have certainly noticed them becoming tougher to calve , Charolais is getting its act together in this respect ,

Hi have you been to a Stirling limmy sale lately, it used to be the case that most of the Scottish consignors took their best bulls to Carlisle, but now 90% of them now solely sell at Stirling, which has resulted in a better show & choice for the purchasers meaning a lot now just go to Stirling. The last time I was at Carlisle a lot of the bulls were short thick set bulls with big ends & very little growth, they wouldn’t sell at Stirling!

No can't say I have been to a limousin sale at Stirling , just read the sale reports , if that was a better venue to take a limousin bull then why are there plenty of Scottish bulls in the Carlisle catalogue and all the big names seem to be going to Carlisle still.
