If i knew a bit about the farm and the area it was from probably the tb1 johnes1....otherwise the tb4 level 3 one....what would you do?
How accurate is the johnes test thing...is a level 3 very risky, nearly bought one the other day!

Probably the same as you, logically the TB1 bull would be a safer bet as it is Johnes 1 too, but there is a bit of a stigma attached to cattle from TB1 areas. Not sure how accurate the Johnes test is, but risk level 3 means positive cattle were found at the last test, but no more than 3% of the whole herd. I have bought a bull before now at risk level 3, not intentionally, but the 3 I picked out went well over budget, and this bull came into the ring and I bought him because he was in price range and I liked the look of him.
Because we are in the PCHS we had to isolate him and test him both blood and dung, he passed both and is now leaving some cracking calves.

Hi, sorry to jump in but I was wondering if anyone knows the buyer “Tick Tack” ??? I’ve just watched a few snips of sales across most of the breeds and they’ve bought maybe 12+ bulls at varying specs. Maybe I’ve picked it up wrong from the video as it’s far from the real thing. Cheers in advance.

There's a guy outside the ring taking bids from buyers out view of the auctioneer.

Would say with a 3 it depends on how long a particular herd has been testing for.
If only been testing for 2-3 years good chance they may be OK. If tested for many years and still a 3 would indicate it is still rumbling away in that herd producing the odd reactor.

One of the biggest entries of Char bulls at Stirling sale today is at level 4.
Be a good guide as to how much attention people pay to such things.

To show you how much notice i take...when i got catalogue i didnt know if 5 was the best score or 1 but then saw all the top herds were 1`s so realised that must be the best score cos they would have to be that score whatever!

Why do so many people buy at sales we tend to buy off the farm looking at bulls in their un tarted clothes. I think we could possibly buy them cheaper at a sale but at least we know we only have one persons deseases

You are right . It is far better to buy off the farm. Look at the cow families. See a bull you like, look at the dam and if possible previous offspring. Any cow will throw the odd cracking calf, it is the cows that throw good calves consistently you want to buy from.

Yes definitely good to see his mother and sisters also we tend to tell the vendor what we are looking for in a bull and they make a recommendation of which of their bulls would suit us. We also say to price it at what you think it's worth we don't barter the price down but will quite happily walk away without one if we think it's too dear

There were 121 bulls sold with an 83.5% clearance and a bull average of £6,062.67.

Revised average from the society , got my original score from the Scottish farmer

Did the Sims have a good day , I've spoken to one or two people saying it was up and down a bit the sale.
No not really, quality up and down, prices well down too( top price 14k ), quite a few knocked down at 3k and below, clearance not great either. bruce campbells wife sold a good saltire bull for 6K.
