Record average for chars at Stirling today.

had a wander round and a very mixed show I thought. Prefer seeing them a few days before out of their show clothes tbh.

I didn’t go, but from what I saw of the judging and sale on the live feed on bookface it looked like a hell of a showing bulls - I didn’t really agree with the judging but that’s buy and the buy. I think this sale and last October has been up there with the best quality since they moved the sales to Stirling.

I couldn’t touch any - again.

The Scottish Farmer reports for Stirling and Carlisle always show (doctored?) photos of the top-priced bulls, which are normally well out of reach of commercial buyers.

I am more familiar with Limousin bulls at Carlisle. There are many well-bred bulls in the 3000gns to 4800gns bracket, some of which have very similar breeding to the champion bulls. Maybe the Limousin Society ( or other breed societies) should ask the press to show identical photos of the lower-priced bulls so that folk who can't attend the sales can compare them with the champion bulls.

@Agrivator There were Charolais bulls making 14000-20000gns going into commercial herds at Stirling. And a large number £10k + bulls as well. I know an 18k bull went to a commercial herd who calves both spring and autumn so he’ll get to sire a lot of calves which helps the price tag.

That's a lot for a commercial farmer to pay, unless it's primarily to breed show calves, or if there is an alternative source of finance

An alternative could have been to buy 4 Limousin ( or Charolais) bulls at 3.5k, and to cull the 3 poorest stock-getters.

Most obvious evidence of doctored photos was first round of covid when there were no Stirling bull sales and it was all done virtual.
The breeders who had paid to get professional photos of their stock all had bulls with small young looking heads. Those that just took the photos themselves bulls had huge rough ugly looking heads by comparison:unsure:
