Hi, i'm 24 and a skilled fencer. I've been putting up stock fencing around my brothers stable for a few weeks now and am wondering what the price for labour is /m others are charging for this style fencing. Im doing all work alone from moving the material 100m/500m away, ramming posts in every 7ft, 2ft in the ground and straining and nailing mesh wire. Terrain is soft in some places and very hard in others. I live in hertfordshire and he is paying for material. My question is what is a fair price /m for labour for the work being carried out ? Thank you for all your responses!

How much do you need per day? You'll not really get a straight answer as everyone has different overheads. Simple way to work it out would be, overhead+profit ÷ meterage or time.

I dont exactly have a quota to fill except he wants all his land renewed with new fencing. I did a full 5 day week @ £80/day 9:30/3:30 and during that week completed 200m of fence with 50 posts being bashed in. Terrain in this area was tough too.

I'm not sure what you want to know? If you are being paid £80/day and do 200 meters, thats 40p per meter, if you are happy and he is happy then its all good. I wouldn't do it for that though.

I want to know what a fair wage is that others are charging for the work im doing in the time it takes me. And he is happy with how much he is paying but i am not. Thanks for response.

Are you hand digging all strainers? What size posts?
Post size are 6ft, 2ft in the ground and 3inch wide. As there are no strainers along the runs i see work ive completed a couple months ago already have been lent on and unstraining by horses. I dont think im being paid enough regardless of not installing strainers as thats what my brother asked for despite me explaining.

He isnt making me install strainers, he is doing it as cheap as possible regardless of my concern of fence durability. Im simply bashing posts in and straining each panel 7 ft wide. Its quite dissapointing really
He's using you as a labourer not a fencer, minimum wage is now £11 ish/hr so it needs to be more than than that if your self employed imo. You can't put a fence up without strainers, but if he's happy with the job then thats his lookout.

A few questions occur:-

You say you’re a skilled fencer - so what rate do you charge for other work you’ve done?

Do you do have any regular employment or are you just going from job to job?

The fencing you’re doing at your brothers - sounds like you’re manually thumping the posts in?

Personally, sounds like your brother is taking advantage of you - usual quote is you can get more than £10 a hour stacking shelves at Tesco
