Stone wall

I want a stone wall building round the garden because the fence is jiggered and need to keep rugrats in and sheep out. Was thinking about 1metre high, 10 inch wide, maye a flag on top. What's the going rate per metre? There's about 20m and the stone is supplied. Tia Flossie

Bloody hell, I wish I lived up with you lot, down here you'd struggle to get anyone to do basic field wall 'gapping' for less than £50 per metre, my Cousin charges £100 per metre for garden walling with the customer supplying the stone, Cotswold limestone will do about 1 square metre per tonne and costs anywhere upward of £60 per tonne, whereas my local fencing guy will put up 100 metre plus runs of stock net with two strands of barbed or slick wire above using creosoted posts and strainers for £5.10 per metre. For me it's a no brainer.

We have a Quickfencer for that, but that's a totally different thread:) Was thinking a bit more ornate for the garden, but at agricultural prices:D

Width is normally one third the height, so you are about right.

Building a wall faced with stone on both sides, takes 3 times as long as just one face.

I may be wrong, but believe that you are more interested in the face visible from the house.

If this is the case, I would suggest that a cheaper option would be to build a concrete block wall, and face on one side with stone. Better still shutter one side and fill with concrete. A better job, and it will last a lot longer.

Maintenance is probably top of the list (or lack of):) seem to be nailing the pickety bits back on all the time and can't be faffed to paint a rendered one (and don't think it would be in keeping) A stone wall looks the part and if done right will last a lifetime. Thanks for the hints on cheapening it, but it needs to look good from both sides:cool:
