To replace the Russian gas, if they stopped using it, would require all the LNG tankers in the world today to just supply Germany, full time. The volume or bulk required to be replaced is mind-boggling and I assume that to be true for the coal as well.
If those taps were turned off it would be devastating, not just for the German people and their economy but for the whole of Europe that would compete for existing available supply. Especially as storage of gas in some countries, including the UK, has been run down to ridiculously low reserves.
And that’s why putin invaded the Ukrainian knowing Europe has it’s hands tied and was unlikely to come to the Ukrainians aid. In all fairness all our countries are so interlocked and dependant on each other it would be hard to alienate a major country without running short of some product. lots of N and potash circles the globe from Russia or produced using Russian NG. Canada is no different. My N was imported so a strong possibility it has Russian ties.

No experience of international business, but would a tanker of fuel getting turned away already have been paid for?
Would depend on the deal I’d imagine, but I can’t see it going with a home if it’s offered at the right price to a russian friendly country. If it’s not paid for ship it back to the Ukrainian as a donation to help out.

The ex-German Chancellor Merkel pandered to the Green Party and shut down German nuclear generators for no good reason, thus making Germany dependent on Russian gas. If Russia switches that off, their industry and homes freeze, it’s as simple as that. They have made themselves hostages to Russian pressure and blackmail. That’s a total abdication of one of the few absolute top responsibilities of any Government and that is to ensure the security of their energy supply. The other imperatives, which I’ve listed before in relation to the UK situation, are security of defence, shelter, food and water in no particular order. The UK is not so hot on these issues either but just maybe this current and near future issues, including exploding food prices and possibly severe shortages moving on until 2024, will open their dopy eyes somewhat and concentrate their priorities?
Merkel needed green party on her side to stay in power so had to do what they wanted.

Trump did point out about Germany buying Russian gas.
Think his point was that Germany does not meet the nato min spend.
Germany then expects nato to help it if attacked by Russia.
Attacked by Russian weapons funded from German cash for gas ...

The best thing we could all do to reduce our dependency on Russian energy is write to or influence our politicians. One silver lining of this very dark cloud is that they are having their eyes opened to the reality of their green lunacy. The Germans are in a tight spot, we at least have the resources and expertise to exploit them. We can all help by ensuring that our voices are heard, you'll be surprised at how far a letter can go.

Russia never really been bothered about casualties
Once upon a time that would have been very true. In the first world war only those in the front got rifles the ones behind picked up theirs from those wwho got killed. The civil war probably much the same and in the second world war there’d be a commisar behind ready to shoot those who weren’t so keen but Afghanistan was lost because the public were n’t keen of people getting killed and coming home maimed and now with a declining birthrate and lots of small families Putin can’t afford a high casualty rate. Lot’s of families with only one child means support might not last long.

We''ve had 70 plus years of relative peace in Europe only a complete nutter wants a war. Putin is a nutter but I don't think the rest of Russia is keen to die or lose their children in a war that's pointless. Russia is a police state but it's much freer than it was in Communist times people know much more than they did before.

And then you get an article today in Sunday Times about fracking being stopped. :banghead: Short sighted idiots😡
My saying is “choice is nice to have, as long as one has choice, but once choice is taken away mankind won’t care about choice, as to survive you will have no
choice”
I do wonder have far some idiots will have to be pushed before they see that.

I do feel sorry for the parents/family of those soldiers being killed through the vile political ineptitude on all sides and funded by the same
We all should feel sorry for the people soldiers and civilians being killed but really there's only one person to blame and that's Putin there can never be an excuse for what he's done.
