Store cattle prices

What is driving the mental up surge in store cattle prices the last two weeks??

Trade is off the clock and at sedge on Sat store cattle were the highest average price ever seen at the market ( and the old Taunton market ).

About time, and to be fair if there not numbers will plummet breeding them aint a lot of fun at the moment.

If the fat price doesn't hit £4 a kilo then the majority of these cattle will lose the buyer's a shed load of money which isn't any good for anyone in the chain..

Down here an average/ small cont x steer ( 220 kilos ) will easily make £700 at the moment..

Trade is up £120/ head on pre xmas trade and the pre xmas trade was up £150 on the Nov price...

Not big numbers of store cattle about the now. A lot of fatteners had a clear out before Christmas, got the cheque for them and the sfp and are looking to stock up again.

Like others have said, Good job. (y)

Abundance of fodder and nothing to do with it other than eat it,better to turn hay into muck through cattle than give it away

Keep the fodder until next winter, it will be needed!!

Which year was it that there was bumper harvest of maize??, yields hit the roof, next year/ ( or the one after ) yields were thru the floor... all that maize was badly needed..

As will be the case with all this years excess fodder.. was only 10 months ago round bale silage was making £30/35/ bale don't forget..

someone must think they can make a pound out off them
just to put a spanner in the works, everyone says sucklers don't pay...bla bla bla.... but all the beef breed stores make mental money, where will they come from if no sucklers, I realise dairy cows have beef breed on them but they aren't quite the quality.
Any opinions on that, we have sucklers and buy a few stores.

Some of these guys have no option but to mow the ground, ESA, if they don't sell or use this year's what will they do with next, it's been a dreadful year, quality of hay is the worst I have ever seen but shed loads of it

I agree about the quality, a lot of silage iv seen is far too stemmy/ over grown due to the yields , looked okay when cut but not as good as looked like it should have been..

Given the price of fert, be better to buy forage now and keep this years until next year, dont use any fert and just take a light cut of grass..

If these store prices stay I can see many people (in low TB areas ) going back into sucklers..

Problem with the dairy cattle is that now most of them are getting far too extreme or out of NZ type mongrels..

I don't recall saying that sucklers don't pay but I don't think that I will get rich out off them, beef breed stores do not make mental money or any such thing
you boys should charge more for your fat cattle or get out the kitchen
