Found out this morning that a second home owner in the village can't get back to where his main home is because his electric car battery is flat, which is stuck in his garage because his electric garage door can't be opened manually and he also has no water because his hi tech water filtration system needs electric to work the pump ! Hahahaha 🤣
Was thinking this this morning weardale has no electric until early next week at the earliest how would we all survive with electric cars and nosolid fuel fires

The guy is a moron then.
When power is so freely available, and every house has it, why would you leave your car flat when we have a storm warning.
If he traveled there when people were warned not to travel he is even more of an idiot.

Also I have yet to see an electric garage door that didn't have a manual override...he is just to stupid too work it out.
As for the water...fair enough

Power been off for 46 hours now, not likely to be back on in the next 24. Menu is Tea, toast, soup and boiled eggs a la wood stove
Only had 3 trees down over the road. Couple of old oaks have been relieved of a limb or 2.
Got off pretty light though compared to a neighbour who spent 5 hours on the chainsaw cutting his way out of his farm.

Is your wood stove suitable to bake potatoes and vegetables in the ashes under the grate with a good fire above? Oil some aluminium foil, and wrap them up well.
Or make a slow cooked stew in a shallow roaster tray well sealed against falling ash?

There’s very little room under the grate but parents stove in the farm house would be better suited for that.

Was thinking about this today and the electric issue and people today are not of the mindset to think ahead for the next day or two with what the weather might do and the country will be at standstill when they are all on ecocars ...... oh well every cloud ....at least we can carry on getting about in a combustion engine and no one on the roads to get in the way .......🤣

Greatest sympathy to those affected.

We were very lucky, with no significant damage. (Just a short length of gutter to re-fit)
A few local lanes were briefly closed with trees down.

This shows up my age but on 8th December 1990 we had a severe snow storm that came so thick & fast the snow sat on the wires & snapped off electric poles. It was very localised to the Midlands.
We had a week without electric and 3 weeks without a phone, no internet in those days 😂
We milked with a PTO drive to the vacuum pump & the milk was collected "as it was" no worries about <6 degrees, they were just glad to have it. No power to drive central heating pump (provided by our Danheat straw burner) , Calorgaz for cooking or toast bread on the fire, no TV just battery powered radio.

When it all calmed down, Dad went out & bought a generator.

We've seen it before & we'll see it again, fortunately we're lucky & wise enough to have generators, 4G etc

Get yourself one of these for next time, or a generator.
