That billion is mostly being spent on modernising the Cologne plant, and both the state and federal governments are also chipping some money in by way of subsidies. The UK is no different from countries like Germany or France, the public ends up footing bills for big multinationals. Just look at Tesla, in line to receive north of €1 billion in subsidies to build a new battery plant near Berlin. Or France 's plan to chuck €4 billion at car manufacturers if they promise to invest it in EV's.

Or the Chinese state!

Quote from the Nissan article:
"And Nissan's partner, Envision AESC, will build an electric battery plant."

Quote from Global Times article:
"Envision AESC has been holding in-depth discussions about technological cooperation with all major global automakers, "and Tesla is not excluded," Zhang added."

I'm guessing that includes Ford? Which brings us back to....

And lithium is plentiful in Afghanistan

The Taliban's new best friends are....

No wonder they were quiet!
How are we sleepwalking into this, I thought we were going to lead the world in battery production (n)

Excellent news for Ford shareholders. Another BIG Brexit bung, to help keep the lights from going out. So big is the bung, neither Ford nor the government prepared to say how much.
Well if we weren't sure before, we now know "which side your bread is buttered". Anything positive for the UK you immediately question and shout down. Good to know where we all stand "on balance" lol

Unfortunately the problem we have with Brexit is when voting we were not given all the facts,
If we had been told at the time if we voted leave that :

Our cowardly prime minister would immediately run away,
The losing side would whine like babies for the foreseeable future,
Our incompetent MPs would pathetically argue about the result for the next 4 years,
We would next be lumbered with May who had coined the phrase "the Tories are the nasty party",
The Tories would be stupid enough to elect the incompetent fool Johnson to finally get us out.

Given all this information in 2016 no mater that to so many of us believe leaving the EU was & is the right thing to do given the way it was undoubtably heading at the time who amongst us can honestly say that given that information above they would have been brave enough to put his cross in the leave box.

Doesn't this shame our leaders in parliament because it really should do!

Tend to agree with you about “the vote” both sides put up lousy cases given the severity of the repercussions. It was easier for the Brexit side to promote what might happen if we left but the Eemian side were very poor putting their arguments forward. Such an important referendum should have had much more reasoned argument especially when giving the decision to the public. So many didn’t know what to really do and just went with the flow I guess. That said it was so close that both sides got almost equal support - suppose that’s democracy working. That’s why as a remain voter I’ve accepted the decision not that I really believe in it but it is want it is.

Personally I think Cameron & the Labour party should hang their heads in shame as to where we now are, we had a referendum & the government of the day had to see it through, if the Labour party disagreed with anything they should have abstained on any vote & let the government of the day take the blame for the outcome.
We are now in the position that the blame for where we are falls very squarely on the Labour Party undermining any negotiation position the government had!
You could argue that their involvement more or less amounted to treason.

The EU had always been a very convenient whipping-boy for UK government mess-ups and the rabid tabloid press to hate, principally because they knew as a bureaucracy it would never defend itself against any accusations. Couple that with Cameron fronting a pathetic remain campaign after 5 years of his crippling austerity policy and a closet brexiteer as opposition leader. And that's before we get to the sea of lies, foreign influence and money.

Exactly, and these plants could have been built in the UK before the UK decided to exile itself.
