Should be a reasonable bike for a starter. As long as it fits reasonably, perhaps you could find a bike fitter locally who would get him in the proper position, it makes a world of difference. Who knows in 6 months he will be looking to upgrade to the full carbon D1.2
Don't forget the power crank!;).

New bikes arrived :D
Took me about an hour to find how to change gears
Just need a dry day and a quiet flat road to give it a try (y)

First ride done (y) way better and less scary than I imagined :D

One slight problem, I couldn't figure out how to change in lower gears? I've got the like flappy padel things on my handle bars and I knock it one way to change down but couldn't figure out how to change it back up :scratchhead:
I presumed the paddle thing knocked the other way but mine didn't seem to? Am I missing something really simple?!

Small paddle to change to a higher gear and you move the actual brake lever inwards to go to a lower gear

Depends on the makr
If shimano change up on the inner lever change down on the outer lever
All on thr right hand side.
It is the reverse on the other side for the front shifters

For schramm change up is a small touch on the inner lever , to change down push the inner lever right across
There are other makes which I have not used
However if the gears have not been set up properly nothing does happen sometimes
I would put the bike upside down on a bench, kitchen table etc. Or ideally in a clamp and spin the pedals while playing sround with the shifters

Right hand does rear gears push whole gear lever in to go to lower/easier gear, click little black bit to go to higher/harder gear. Left hand side does same for front gears but it's the opposite way round, push whole thing for harder, click small black bit for easier. When first starting out you want the chain to be on the small cog at the front and large cog at the back. Purists would say you never want to have the chain going from smallest ring to smallest sprocket as it causes extra wear but don't worry about that until you get the hang of the gears, stay in the smallest ring on the front and shift speeds using right hand only. I also find that it saves your knees if you try and spin your legs relatively fast, less pressure on your knees. I like 80 -90 rpm for my feet.
