Straw 2017 here we go

Location

Your mate that works at Exeter sold the standing straw today @farmerclare ,,, all I can say is that he was hopeless at the job and the way the sale was conducted was the worst I have ever seen at a fodder/ straw sale and thus trade was back compared to other local sales this week!

You're buying surely that's a good thing?

Nope, he offered one lot with the option of other lots, would sell one of these lots then offer the rest again, people had no idea what they were bidding for! He would also offer a lot with the option of the next lot, not sell this lot then withdraw both lots even thou people wanted to bid on the second lot (ie offer 78 acres and 26 acres of oats, not sell the 78 acres so withdraw the 26 acres etc etc ) then missing bids all over the shot..

Sounds a shambles

He made a couple of mistakes but nothing major but today's average prices were ahead of those that @Sid mentioned earlier this week.. By some margin so not a bad job at the end if the day, he worked hard for the bids given the number of buyers. Couple of mistakes forced by one buyer who was mucking about. You may not have seen that where you were stood.

I've no axe to grind as no straw in the sale and only know the auctioneer on nodding terms.

Yep it was, worst auctioneering I have ever seen at a straw sale in 20 years!

Should be sold as a lot on its own and not offering so many fields with the first lot.

Very few people would want over 100 acres of oat straw for starters but 26 acres ( 2nd lot ) is more practical
I find it rather bizarre this is how straw is sold to be honest

As a buyer I do NOT like this offering so many lots with the first lot, utter shambles and doesn't work with in the vendors best interests.

If I had straw in today's sale I would not be happy

Averages were well lower than the shobrook sale

So what were the averages?

You need to listen what was said by the auctioneer, the grouping of lots was mainly dictated by the vendor, especially the big seller today.

He had lots of smaller lots and requested how they were grouped, especially the smaller lots. Think it was made clear each time.

I was not confused once and knew what was being sold and the option on further lots.

It worked well for some groups with I think a run of Spring barley going to the same buyer

I mean standing crops by auction
IME you need to know who/how it's going to be combined. Some operators and some machines can make a proper 'dogs breakfast' of a decent crop of straw.
I wouldn't want to be paying those SW prices for some muppet to cut it with an Axial Flow on a really hot day

Just build relationships with people and deal with the same people year after year

I agree with that, I won't sell my straw in an auction if I can avoid it, by the tonne has to be fairer. Standing looking at a field of wheat trying to second guess the yield of straw is nigh on impossible.

I can take 10 steps in a field and the yield could drop 50%.
