Hi just trying to put some prices together for straw baling this season.
How many 120x90 bales would you expect to get per acre of straw.
thanks

Winter barley around 1.8-2t per acre so around 4-5 bales per acre depending on moisture %. That’s assuming bales weigh 420-450kgs. Wheat maybe the same or a bit less. Spring barley could be anything from 2-4 bales per acre depending on the season, spring crops very much reliant on rain in April early May. Also a lot depends on the combine your baling behind.

Just being nosey, but how does bales per acre affect what price you charge?

If it's a lighter crop you just increase forward speed and clear more acres per hour.

Technically it shouldn’t affect the per bale price, but if like me you know pretty much how many acres your going to bale. You could like me end up breaking even or making a loss, I shall be making a loss as in a normal year I only just break even !.

Yes sorry .
Cant beat a 120,70 if you get a good man on the baler
Why do some men have the ability to get weight in a bale that orhers dont . Is it down to speed
Depends on the baler I think. My old MF190 I need to keep speed down to maintain bale weights. Think the new krones you can go for it and maintain decent weights.

If its going to rain the next day you have to decide weather you want heavy bales or wet straw lying in the bout.

If you want heavy bales go slower and whack the pressure up. If you want to pay for the kit and eat as well, while competing with stupid cut throat prices then slack pressure off a bit and drive as fast as conditions allow.
Simple really, take cheapest quote and get pillows or find a good reliable operator and be happy to pay another 25p a bale. The cheapest isn’t always the least expensive in baling.

Thats quite light for 120x90 bales
Loading out here from last harvest and 120x90 averaging about 550Kg/Bale (Claas baler)

That’s what I’ve had done by a contractor for the past few years and they vary from 420-460kgs. Last year was a wet one so perhaps you were paying for water?? In the drought of 2018 most balers were struggling to get the weight in the bales.
