Chop straw, returns P and K, and straw rots down. Win Win, no wheel deep marks off loaded trailers, loaders ect, save on having to sub soil. Plus not getting someone else`s black grass seeds back in the muck deal, Win Win.

Is it only from pigs? , because if from cattle fed on hay it could contain BG seeds unlikely in silage.

These prices make me question the straw for muck deal. Could I sell straw and spend the money on a bit more fertiliser or green manure. Save a lot of handling
To be fair those crops have done well down this road. There will be a lot more straw on there than there was last year.

Conversion of straw to soil organic matter is quite inefficient by the time the bugs breaking it down have all breathed out a lot of CO2. Other methods of increasing soil OM are much more efficient e.g. root exudates from a high yielding crop. I have spent years returning straw to my fields and often compromised establishment of following crops ( particularly after chopped winter barley and spring barley ) when i could probably have increased soil om more by selling straw and getting better following crop.

Interesting reply but I'd imagine soil type plays a huge difference aswell.
The sandy soils of south Herefordshire eat straw at a much quicker rate
than the well bodied heavier soils up North of the county.

My local sale was keen , S Barley around £85 / ac, W Barley £130- £175 / ac and W Wheat £100 - 150 !!!

My guess is that here in lincs the straw men will be offering same as ever, £12/£13 for a 4x4 Heston. Our ground is currently too wet for that to be of interest to me.
