Straw in the swath, auction results 2021

What is oat straw like for bedding? I don't believe I have ever used it on any of the places I have worked.
We combine our winter oats for crimping when the straw is still pretty juicy and so we just ted it out and wait a few days before baling - usually gets rained on. The straw is a lot more absorbent than oat straw is usually.

whats a “typical” year ? straw prices swing a lot locally

also would depend upon the seasons carbon price

but the ISO platform let’s you see “what if” senarios to help you decide all that

this year the carbon would be worth more than the straw for us but I’ve not sold carbon on rented and contract farmed land

you also have to consider the nutritional and OM benefit to future yields

straw is seriously undervalued IMO
never mind straw being undervalued the grain is even worse

yep plenty still taking 70's prices for their grain while straw is many many many times what it was back then
Oh well. Do livestock farmers take 2nd / 3rd / 4th cut silage to increase gross margin ? Or are subsequent cuts a " waste product " to give away free ? Just wondering.....

give away free
yes straw was given away free or burnt back in the 70's now its worth in many cases over £100/ton
yet grain is not much more per ton than it was back then,
I hope you give your grain merchant more grief than you do straw buyers on here ? have you been on the phone to them today to tell them they are about £800 undervaluing your product ?

Arable farmers should see straw like livestock farmers see manure, its got a certain level of value but at the end of the day its a waste/by product . Livestock men have helped out the arable boys this year giving over the odds for straw .
Apart from an extreme weather event during planting there will be no reason for straw to be dear next though.
