Straw per ton 2020

Only a small selection but I know of two large cereal farmers who bale and sell every year around 10,000 tonnes each. One has 9,000 tonnes unsold and the other 8,000 tonnes. They refused to sell because the price wasn’t good enough. They’ll both be baling everything again. Even though yields will be down they have lots of stock and will end up with more than normal. I’ve also spoken to a merchant about ours and he’s offering £50/t in the stack citing his customers won’t accept high prices and will move to alternatives. So there may well be a shortage but if there’s no customers at £100/t delivered on farm then the arable farmer won’t be seeing £70/t in his pocket.

If it gets to £150 it won’t get much wear but it will stay on the combine! Weather at the time will dictate whether I chop or not farm more than the price.

I totally agree, I normally chop most of my straw every year unless weather and price allow me to bale without causing damage to the fields.

being quoted £85 good barley straw delivered now, I know our supplier is worried about amounts of straw, also got a sneaky suspicion, he's already got a lot in barns. Don't blame him either, he's always fair with price, except hay now, very short where he is, and dear! but got some elsewhere.
