there is some big acreages in those lots, not for the fainthearted!
Local sale was from 3 to 29 acres, not many in single figures in that catalogue!

Look at Ahdb wheat or barley guide the straw roots and char contains some nitrogen
a 8 tonne ha yield ha a similar amount of straw roots and chaf half can be baled the rest goes into the total non grain biomass from the crop contains 80 kg of n not enough to keep the c/n ratio right
but selling straw takes some n away along with other nutrients we have to utilise it before it is lost to the drains
I believe the victorians understood this better than we have done since the cheap bag of n was available
now with n at 50p a kg or more compared to under 10 p in the 20thieth century
just an diesel is now 45p a litre compared to 5p in the mid 20tieth c

imho a cover crop can cover its cost in nutrients and drainage
I agree. We have never done much baling but definitely won’t anymore I don’t think. Too valuable to me and too much hassle.

One lot of 850 acres SB off Velcourt £32 acre.
I once bought one lot of 800 acres of SB straw at £33/ acre in today's money, baled it, carted it and stacked it all up waiting for the winter to come.

This was autumn 1962, and by Christmas it was all sold to our usual friendly merchant for an attractive sum which was then enough to buy at least three cottages in the local village, possibly four.

On Boxing Day 1962 it got all completely snowed up for 13 weeks with no access then possible and, given the ice and snow damage suffered, on Easter Monday 1963 we set fire to all 56,000 bales.

had a chap ring yesterday asking if I would like to sell a field of off lying sp barley, he offered a price / acre , im of the view that nothing leaves here without me knowing the weight of it within a few %, I suggested he could bale it or we would bale it then we would weigh and he could have it at a price/ ton to be agreed prior to baling in whichever big bale shape or size he wanted.Said he didnt know the average of or how heavy his baler made them,so I suggested he must have had an idea as to how many tons/bales /acre was in the crop to make the initial offer ,seems not
