Straw

Shallow rooted cereals sitting in wet soils on heavier land around here (the fields which have been drilled that is). Thinner plant population due to slugs / water logging / potential shallow rooting once it dries out and moisture heads south faster than the roots can follow it down will see more PGR applied to reduce risk of root lodging. Later drilled winter cereals and now potentially later drilled spring cereals will run through growth stages with little tillering. All in all, not a great outlook for straw volumes - some guys who grow their own around here don’t think they’ll have enough so will need to buy in as well.

Wood chippings from a tree surgeon work well as a base layer in cattle yards - tend to keep the whole bed drier.

Aye fair enough

It was 17 years ago after the single payment came in

Store yearling bullocks were making 220p/kg

And last week the trade lifted again to average......

220p/kg

No specs required of any colour

From late 2004, the only old FW I can find, stores top price £606, Finished cattle £1.83kg/dw, liveweight under £1/kg

Recent estimates are that between 55 and 60% of winter wheat was sown.
However IME when ever the price of straw is talked up it always encourages more to bale and then the price falls away.
I'll bale what I need for the pig unit and the rest is getting chopped.

PS Here only 35% of the farm drilled up to now. 12% going to be fallowed and the rest spring wheat and barley if I can get it in.
Plenty have done very little drilling around here.

Me and my other small family farming neighbours in the sub - 500 acre bracket are drilled up (the winter stuff anyway). The bigger neighbours haven't drilled a seed and some of them grow 5000 acres plus of winter crops, mainly wheat of course.
