If you get a machine, even a 12v one, and learn to do it yourself, you will at least have the choice of when to do it. Always plenty of little flocks about that struggle to get a 'proper' shearer in, and who are used to paying well for the service, if you have the time or inclination to do it.
And if I was going to buy a shearing machine, I would not have one with a motor in the handpiece (well I would, really good for dagging the odd ewe, especially 12 volt), but for shearing I would buy a lister two speed with a flex drive.
 
Doesn't matter how you clip them as long as you get the wool off and don't cut off any vital bits of anatomy like tits and legs.

Biggest part is holding the sheep.
If there is wool in front of the comb, keep moving it...
