Strip grazing stubble turnips

Need some advice first time growing stubble turnips I’m strip grazing cows and calves running back onto grass fields eaten all the grass now do I need to feed anything else other then the turnips they’ve got got grazing minerals in licks

We graze ours on forage rape and always introduce them slowly - couple of hours a day to start and then build up. They’ve also got access to barley straw.
If it comes colder, don’t let them on until the frost has gone off. Heard of a few losses of cattle when it was frosty a few weeks ago

We’ve 20 in calf sucklers left out and they’re eating about a third of a 4’ round bale per day

They obviously be them there experts. I’ve been wintering sheep on roots crops for over 30 years. It’s very rare that i’ve Ever put bales of anything out, and they’ve normally been wasted when I have. I would only ever put bales out if I was short on fodder and wanted to eek the crop out. Even then, I would know that I had created a congregation point for them to get plastered in mud.

The appreciate that the job may be different for cattle though, which the OP was asking about, but on the odd occasion we’ve had dairy breeds out on roots, they’ve hardly touched anything in a rack unless they were very hungry, so most was wasted. Watch min levels though, especially Iodine, and low Calcium if in late pregnancy.

Sheep - never bothered with any supplementary feed or water other than a bit of a lie back area. For sucklers I used to round bale every other swath of barley straw and strip graze so they got a couple of fresh bales every other day. Put the bales in rows along the field. They'd eat half and lie on the other half. 1/2 day with a forklift and trailer at the end of the grazing period and the field would be clear of heaps.
