Strip till versus no till

We run to some fairly steep slopes, as in everything in the cab slides when you turn round, and they are mostly clay (Eastern Wolds Edge). The DTS has been very helpful in getting the soil in a condition to take DD, and ourselves in a mindset to understand DD. The bottom land which is mostly clay over peat, or silt over peat works well with a reduced tillage system and we can now go to the next step. There is no possible way that just changing from conventional tillage to DD would have worked here, unless there was a long time frame in which it to come right, especially when you have to show some return on investment to a board (albeit understanding and supportive) each year.

Well I've just spent most of the day with Jeff Claydon, and what informative day its been.
Till you have a look at his farm and see the soil conditions, its incredible, seeing is believing.
Its all very well looking at fancy kit at shows all pristine and shiny but to go and look around a farm and see it used in action is another thing and the long term benefits is a real eye opener.

Thank you Jeff for showing me around your farm and factory and for your great hospitality.

@Brisel haven't ordered one yet!

You had a lucky escape - Jeff doesn’t normally let you leave without buying something :D
Some body needs to get a pencil sharpener, was thinking about a t4 trailed ££££ even using their calculator still takes some head scratching.

How are you getting on, are you seeing an improvement in your soil yet?,it was incredible too see all his worms.

Lots of steel in a trailed model. I was quoted £102k for a 6m trailed with the big hopper in 2015. The 6m mounted was nearly half that.

I haven’t “measured” the soil as such yet, but wheat yields are up slightly and spring crops are down no thanks to a run of late springs followed by long dry spells. It’s a great drill for osr and beans.

if you want to come and have a look around / chat you are always welcome

key is not to focus on the machinery and think carefully about rotation / nutrition and organic matter
Your comment reminds me of this

which as you know is remarkably close to the mark!
I think strip-till would be a good leg-in to full no-till in your climate and soils, not quite so popular down here but the soils are generally either very fresh - or else still getting cultivated.

Big +1, the tools don't really make a massive difference but nutrition and rotations, covercrop choices etc make massive differences to outcomes

No Slyboss then ?

I forgot. Also no StripCat. Boss has undergone a bit of a change recently. The French side is marketed via Agrisem in yellow paint but is the same. George Sly is going to be marketing his own version as Horizon Agriculture. @fleetg knows more about that than me.
