Yes, well, that's what you get when the NFU spend decades advocating increased supermarket power.
As you sow.....

What a load of rubbish the NFU have never advocated increased supermarket power, it had already happened. If anything they tried to dilute the effect.
I find it laughable some of the comments knocking the NFU when at the present time they are the only ones sticking up for the industry and having a direct line to the government.
The work that has and is being done on issues from Milk supply chain issues to seasonal labour is not being done by anyone else!

Has anybody done the sums and worked out what the total furlough bill will be if this carries on until 1st May? 1st July??

I have a feeling we will still be talking about the economic impact in 20 years time.

Luckily people will always need to eat, much of what people spent their money on has turned out to be non-essential.

The whole job will cost 100% of GDP

That is some figure !!!

this may not be as significant as everyone thinks. As long as the money is spent on products within the country and remains here it will still be taxed. Yes there will be a period of recession followed by a period of inflation which will eventually put some of the issues right as higher interest rates will be one of the consequences.
You have to remember that this time the whole World (apart from China perhaps) is in the same financial mess!

I not worried about most mentioned here.
My concern is the weather.
Been a heat wave since we started spring drilling. Nothing hardly growing.
All winter rape wrote off.
If we don't get rain soon then we won't have any crop worth cutting this year.
This exactly I'm really worried about the weather

If other countries don't buy from China they will be in a mess before long too.

I hope the UK govt. pushes the "buy british" message with all products (esp. non-ag) after this to help boost our own economy.

Interestingly enough the company that we supply veg to is unable to furlough staff because it employs more than 250 people. Of those people 20 percent are either off sick or self isolating last week they paid over £10000 in sick pay which they won't get back. The supermarkets aren't paying them anymore yet they are moving mountains to get produce into the supermarkets.

I hadn't really twigged on the 250 employee limit - I can see how businesses over this limit will be the ones to really struggle over the next few months.

? How have McDonald’s done it then? They have 135,000 employees? Maybe franchise's?

Its run by individual franchises as far as I know. McDonald's don't employ all those people.
From their website....
A franchised restaurant is a restaurant operated by a local business person trading under the McDonald's name. Currently over 70% of our restaurants in the UK are franchised but, from a customer point of view, there's no difference. For employees, there will be differences between a company and a franchised restaurant – those working in franchised restaurants will be employed by the franchisees themselves. Any further differences will be listed in the individual job details.
A lot of the franchises are owned/operated by relatively big groups - in fact it's quite difficult to break into McD franchising because you're supposed to have experience of running fast food franchises before they'll consider letting you in the door.

Wrong, zero hour contracts are still eligible. The pay calculation should be based on the average of the previous 12 weeks pay - the same as holiday pay etc.
