Struggling to fall asleep

I don't have trouble going to sleep as long as the TV is on, just to take my mind off the day's problems but I often wake up at 3/4am and there's no way I can get back to sleep then. Usually nod off about 5.55 and my alarm goes off at 6. The worst thing about waking up in the early hours is not being to do anything about it without waking the rest of the house up so usually end up staring into the darkness with all sorts of things going through my mind...
I'm exactly the same. No tv but I do read my kindle before dropping off. Then awake around 3. When I find myself thinking too much I read again. Takes the mind off things. Then back to sleep just before the alarm :(

Ive not been to bed before 3am for the last 10 weeks due to lambing, some mornings I’ve not hit the pillow untill 6am after 24 hours straight through and all i can say is, when you cant sleep you simply cant sleep I’ve been there loads of times over the last 2 and a half months and when that brain starts to get stimulated and spinning around in circles it takes a hell of a lot to stop it!!

Best remedy I’ve found is to concentrate very hard on the following - lightly tense up and down every muscle in your body starting with your toes, then ankles, calf’s, thighs, stomach and back muscles, up your arms all the way to your hands and back up to your neck and then back down! Keep repeating the above! The wave motion will send you off to sleep but you have to focus only on this as its so freaking boring it’ll help send u off lol.

Hope this helps
Good luck

Yes, but by the time you get to my age you don't have that many muscles. Feet, arms, chest (breathing) what next?
Repeat in a wave motion??????????????/

Podcasts here too. I like gardeners question time - interesting enough to listen to but boring enough to fall asleep to! Also The Archers, More or Less, The Bottom Line. I don't like radio in the middle of the night, the news can be depressing!
Womans hour for me......although, the conversations are sometimes quite interesting that you find yourself staying awake to listen!!!! I have also uploaded a free 'mindfulness' app onto my phone, called 'Headspace' - 10 min sessions to listen to.....I've yet to get to the end of one before falling sleep - definitely works - focuses on your breathing, all very boring but does the trick!

If I’m awake in the middle of the night I start counting or matching vehicles to numbers. Eg
1=series 1 Land Rover
2 =jcb 2cx
3= Land Rover disco 3
Etc. Quite a few gaps after 8 though. So maybe you lot could help me fill up the numbers

that would keep me awake for ages !!

Your mashing with your brain if you are on the computer all evening give yourself rules. All switched off by 8pm, some TV until 9.30 then the radio. It isn't scientific that you need to slow down towards bedtime and never compare how you used to be everything changes. I struggle to read in the night my eyes are tired. Why not download some audio books?

A book I read a while ago suggested the usual no screens things, plus a breathing technique that works for me. Lay down on your back with your arms by your side with your hands lightly resting on your stomach, take a deep breath and focus on what is happening to your body, for example the rise and fall of your hands in time with your breathing. Keep focusing on the breathing and it's effect as you take each breath, whenever your mind starts to wander force it back to thinking about the breathing. As time goes on your breathing will begin to slow down and the gaps in between grow longer - if necessary you can count the seconds between them to occupy your mind. It may take a few attempts before it works - I think it took me two weeks to get the full benefit. The important thing is not to stress about it not working or whether you are doing it properly - in time it will come naturally.

Try power harrowing at 2kph then your have trouble staying awake....

....on a serious note I suffer from this a lot and as others suggest, a radio on in the background on a talk show so your mind focused on the discussion helps a lot.

Although My worst thing now seems to be falling asleep and 10pm then being wide awake at 4am [emoji45]
