Struggling to get limestone grit for rations.

Aye-up,

I have a customer who keeps cattle and laying hens. He’s been buying his limestone grit through Frank Wright Trouw for years but now they’re saying they can’t supply him.

He’s asked me to help, I’ve given him details for Longcliffe, BLI, Ben Bennett Jnr and Singleton Birch, but I have no real idea if they produce what he wants or if they are still in business.

Where do you all get your ingredients?

Cheers, Pete.

Limestone flour is just calcium carbonate.
Last we got in bags came from Longcliffe Quarries in Derbishire.

We ordered a ton a fortnight ago. Dealer brought us 1/2 ton they had in stock today to tide us over as they couldn’t get it anywhere.

I'd imagine the big firms have it blown in bulk, ours used to come in 50kgs like cement bags, flour or granules. Frank Wright rings a bell from the old days.

When we'd a laying shed producing slurry, the limestone used to settle in the bottom of the tanker

No doubt Longcliffe could tell you who may have something in your area.

Thanks all. I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but I am well aware what limestone is, (calcium carbonate) it consumes my life!!!!

My customer is struggling to get any of the right grade, that’s the problem!

He needs specific grades, No. 4 grit and No. 6 grit.

May be a bit far??

There’s a quarry down this way that does it I think.

Maybe speak to Lime Distributors Ltd. as they will know.

The stone used to build York Minster is Magnesian Limestone. Obviously a very hard variety, or it would just crumble.

The Monumental sculptors will have plenty of offcuts or shavings in their yard adjacent to the Minster where they refashion some of the carved stones. You'd be able to visit the Christmas Market at the same time. :)

Ours comes from Tarmac in a powder tanker lorry. But the company that handles it and arranges the transport for us is Waltons: https://www.hwaltons.co.uk/meet-the-team/

There’s a whole variety of grades, the nutritionist advises which spec to use.

yes, very specific apparently , that’s why I’m asking for advice. I’m aware there are dozens of grades, as is my customer, but it’s the specific grade he’s after which is the problem.

We do a lot of Limestone and have had a huge amount of new business come on because other people seem to be struggling.

What we have in stock is possibly too fine for what he wants as all ours goes into ruminants.

Trouw will most likely use the tarmac quarry... is the proper name for what he uses number 4 grit and number 6 grit? What packaging and quantity does he normally take?
