Ploughing the Turnip ground as sheep went today
The Kale and especially the Rape have long stalks left ,would never get eaten
Quite a lot of the Stubble Turnips have gone to waste ,should have been eaten in February
The only plot of roots thats been well cleared is the Massif , still feeding on the little bits today , Green Globe yielded just as well , feeding better than the Stubble Turnips but not as the Massif
I think if you want to feed late in the Winter they apart from Swedes you wont beat Maincrop Turnips especially Massif , rape kale and Stubble Turnips show to much waste that they wont eat

What sort of numbers of lambs could i run on 14 acre of stubble turnips, looking at dd after winter oats come off in August? Aiming to put lambs on late and feed through to March/April? Will probably have 200 of my own lambs and can buy/sell to accommodate if required.

250 on a good crop.. 300 if your killing them as you go along
That's about what I thought
But I would not be placingmoneyon it ,
As we know it's very dependant on the weather at timeof sowing
I had hell of a crop last year but by end of March they would not touch them , gone woody , the maincrop turnips they ait fine , but August may be to late for these

I’ve ploughed another 5ac of rougher grass, had some rashes etc, will get a double run with the power Harrow before sowing, planning on putting in Samson with the grass seeder. What kg seed per acre, what fert/weight, and should I use a pre-emergence spray? If so what type?

No more than 1.5 kg
1 to 1.25 kg acre is what most go at
But yoh rashes concern me , stubble turips wont do on poor wet land if thats what it is ,
For wetter poorer land better with rape and ryegrass , where the rape fails the grass wont

Thanks, will got with that seed rate. How about fert and spray? It’s not wet land, had just been neglected for decades prior to us getting it, so just a hangover from that. Has had mountains of lime over the last ten years, has grown drilled swedes previously. Worried about turning old weed seeds back to the surface.

I do things a bit diferrently , sow first and leave for 3 weeks , if it looks like is going to be a good crop i wack a fair bit on , around 3 cwt acre 20.10 .10 , or 15 15 15 depending on your p&k , roots respond well to potash mind

That’s what I do.. the few plants you flatten bounce back and if it’s a failing crop youv not wasted good money after bad… also stops the turnip running out of steam I think

Would a red clover mix take well if DD with gutler into the cleared stubble turnips park next spring? Maybe need sprayed roundup and pre emergence then? Will take a while for our soil temps to reach 10celcius up here
