Subtle yet effective Hi Vis clothing

Another vote for orange hi-vis, used to wear yellow when working on forklifts loading lorries and every damned wasp and bug would swarm on you. Another example is what happened when your New Holland combine broke down when you're trying to get that rape crop you thought would go without dessicating? :banghead:

We used to keep our bee hives next to a gas distribution bunker, we put a note on the door to tell anyone to remove their hi-vis as the bees a love it. I had more than one engineer leg it sharpish after telling me they weren't allowed to work without it on.

I personally spend all day in high vis clothing, makes no difference to normal when trousers, shirt and hoodie are all rail spec (orange and reflective), yes you look a bit construction crew like but that could be softened by the addition of company logos. The workwear is comfortable and long lasting. I farm and work as an ag/plant mechanic so it gets mud, oil abuse, washed regularly. The bit that sold it for me was helping a neighbour gather his little bales with a team of others at night (pitch black) the telehandler operator said everyone should be wearing that gear as I could be seen a mile off as the light bounced off the reflective strips. Here is where I get the gear from: https://www.bestworkwear.co.uk/workwear/hi-visibility-clothing.html

It's seems strange at first but I do feel safer wearing it. I know I was forced into it due to working on sites and they won't let you fix stuff without wearing Hi-Vis, the job can come in last minute and I found the high vis vests a pain for getting trapped in stuff I was working on and generally always mucky as thrown back in the van when I left site never to be worn again until the next occasion. But anyone who knows me doesn't think anything of the full Hi-Vis gear I think it would almost be a shock if I wasn't wearing it! I do think it is a good thing but it doesn't appeal to everyone, cost isn't really a valid excuse either as I find it cheaper than normal workwear...

Bit of a waffle on but I'd like to think it is an honest review, hopefully helping make your decision a bit easier.

True but your on a farm and according to all the threads on here there's no money for H&S as you can't pass the cost on unlike every other business.
Employees and H&S costs. Your doing it all wrong you know:p

I'm not really against a uniform, just got sick of all the yellow. None of the bosses wore it unless they were outside, then they just chucked a vest on.
Do you wear high viz on your milk float?

Is there any hi viz shirts available that aren’t made out of horrible stinky polyester?

look to Australian gear
100 % cotton drill shirts

we have hi vis in every sort & style & material of clothing you could ever possibly want.
HUGE choice . . .

ps - polyester is sh!t & you CANT wear polyester shirts here in any comfort

besides, as a cotton farmer I always & only ever wear cotton

100 % lightweight cotton drill ( & it’s even UPF rated for sun protection ) . T shirts & polo shirts are sh!t in hot weather anyway, much better & cooler with lose cotton drill shirts that keep the sun off bare skin

Actually saying that you can order them from Alibaba and import it for about $5/shirt i think. Need to bulk buy 1000+ to get the order though. Business for someone although probably not rated to UK standards so taking a bit of a punt imo

What exactly are you looking for a UK stockist for?

To be acceptable for use here it would have to be certified to the relevant BS standard. There are plenty cotton hi viz shirts in this country already, I suspect - if you spent a bit of time on google.

Back in the 90's when i was delivering milk we always wore hi viz vests when delivering on the main rd, Back then hi viz probably wasnt so common other than police stood out with radar gun and you could certainly hear vehicles braking when headlights caught the reflective strips. These days my mrs laughs at me and asks if i'm going tarmacing when i take the dog out in full hi viz but i'd rather be seen theres enough people on rd in the dark wearing black. When i was in NZ 2010 i came back with a stock of swandri cotton polos with the yellow stripes on, when they wore out did look to get more over here but couldnt and had a conversation with another lad who had been nz and done the same.

I understand the need for safety on the farm. It sounds like a bustling environment with lorries and tractor/trailers around. Incorporating high visibility into the workwear seems like a prudent step. Perhaps discreet strips on polo shirts or trousers could strike the balance between safety and professionalism. It's great that your company already issues branded workwear. You might find some useful options at global-workwear.co.uk. Stay safe out there!
