Yeah, it was a round-about way of saying that it will be something other than a financial decision, which is fine, it just makes me laugh when I hear/read about how profitable folks sucklers are when there is clearly no rent/buildings/truck/trailer/ insurance/101 other fixed costs in the equation. They will produce a GM, but profit, nah.

As for colour, I would have suggested British White but breeding females are currently making silly money due to a non-farming-money buyer. That's the thing with minority breeds, the low numbers means that it doesn't take much for the price to be skewed.
l think we have your non farming buyer close by, seems to be a lot more than usual around, must admit, they look fantastic on the hills, with the sun on them.
He seems to be completely loaded, the amounts he is spending on creating his business, is mind boggling, millions and millions. Look up 'emily estates',
I don't think anyone can absorb the huge figures being spent, without actually seeing it, it is really indescribable, how about a traffic bridge, over an A road, he's already put a tunnel under another.

I am quite happy with AA and AAX cows, grass fed, slow grown, premium meat especially if you can sell it retail.

Herd health vital at the start, saves a lot of bother later when you have more.

Make sure that you have good handling facilities - race, crush and a calving gate/hurdle as well as a Vink.

Fixed costs kill suckler profits, cheap grass and buildings are key, you have those.

Heard of a new estate owner in Perthshire who is spending £350k/ month on improvement projects. London money, but at least it’s being (mostly) spent locally.

Wifey went with some girlfriends to the Newt a few weeks ago, seems we are lucky to have a place like that not too far away.

They are out bidding everyone at the breed sales, which is resulting in some impressive prices but unhappy underbidders, sooner they have the numbers they want the better.

Interesting observation. As a result of the pedigree men not being keen on the also rans and limited attendance by commercial buyers?
Probably pedigree breeders not wanting to buy the bottom end of a dispersal and commercial buyers seem to think pedigree herds are made up of heavy fleshed glossy cows, when the reality is that the bull breeders are often the more modest looking cows in the herd.

If starting off, I'd buy those bottom end cows every time and breed up from there, the big silky cows are probably going to be the end of the line and just breed worse than themselves.

The show cow rarely ever has a show calf, but to act on that you need to dis-own vanity
