Suckler scanning

if you are going to estramate and cull those that got in calf late why did you not just take the bull out quicker ?

Didn't have anywhere to put an odd bull on his own. Plus I find it easier to either sell on late calvers in calf or estrumate and kill. It's fine if we can get the time to get cattle in and pull the bull out but if we're busy combining jobs have to be prioritised.

Is anyone else's spring calvers held their condition very well? Moved mine today and there just on the fat side

Mine complete opposite, hard year here since August lost a lot of condition. In since Saturday getting 2kgs of Blend to try and bring them up.
My new bull is looking awful dreading scanning. Young bull is say lost 200kg what's chances he will have worked for 9 weeks?

9/10 heifers in calf to old bull, was only in for 3 weeks, sold him for breeding on so wanted to check encase any comebacks, wish had kept him.

Hopefully bull has lost condition due to working. What breed of cows you got?

AA, Her and Lim out of dairy cows mainly, no high flyers but suits my system easy calved easy worked with.

I hope you're right about the bull, every time I look at him now I say to myself why did I buy that bundle of scrap, hope he proves me wrong.

Crosses out of dairy cows never hold there condition in a bad year, get some sim-luings (y).

Lim bull.
Heifers calving next year are home bred stabilisers to our old blonde bull, trying to breed up abit without losing milk or quietness.
Have some pure blonde cows and a lovely 10 month old bull calf which I hope will turn out good enough for next bull.

I usually don't have many problems with cows light, find the AA keep condition best but this year we have only had 6/7 dry days since start of August haven't had a fair chance.

Make sure they get checked 'by hand' as well if empty. We have had a few in to kill with big calves in them before. Phoned farmer and told they had been scanned empty. Sometimes a big calf will lie really low, not detectable with scanner.
this is true, if you think the calf may be a fare way on tell the vet/scanner.
A good reason to not have the bull in to long and to scan as soon as possible after the bull comes out

Last autumn 8% empty both heifers and cows. Heifers had 9 weeks with the bull cows had 12. This year cows only had 11 fingers crossed for when we pd in about a month.

I dont bother scanning any more, seems if they are not bulling they are in calf 90% of the time and if you keep all the dates of when the bulls ran with the cows you pretty much know the calving period.
:scratchhead:
I think scanning sucklers is one of the best management tools on the farm. We calve twice a year and any that aren't in calf get ONE second chance in the other herd. Our autumn calvers graze on the hill over the summer (without a bull). Without scanning those that are empty would have wasted a whole year. Rarely get many empties in the spring calvers though...

Same here apart from only heifers or very good cows get a second chance
