Sugar Beet 2020

Fairness went a long time ago. I think Newark is well over supplied. I am not sure whether the virus will reduce tonnage or more likely sugar levels which is a pain for farm and factory alike having to handle a bigger volume for lower sugar yield.
Dithering over whether to sign up or not. The only thing in favour is I refurbished a cleaner loader last year and want to get back what I spent on it, otherwise I am struggling to find a reason to carry on. I’d probably be better off just selling the cleaner loader.

Who's sent there contract back?????
I started doing mine this AM but I must admit I couldnt really make arse or middles out of all the contract changes.

To me it seems its the same old just dressed up in fancy clothes.

They're now paying for the whole beet to so I guess dirt tares will go up and now theres less incentive to get high sugars and we wont get paid as well for them all the beet will now be 18%plus.
On the bright side because of the change to the sugar scale we wont have to worry as much about amino Ns.

Very good strategy it's a pity we haven't got a union will the danglies to get all growers to do the same.

I was chatting to a friend today and we both said it was odd no one seems to have heard anything about any test digs every year theres some talk about what test digs have been like and that gives an indication of the campaign ahead.

Maybe they're keeping quite as to not scare is all away.

Looked at mine. Really can't understand why the pricing has become sooo complicated, and why they just don't keep it simple and pay a bit more for the beet instead of all the bonuses, insurances, etc, etc, which no one ever gets anyway. No real incentive to return immediately to get the first choice variety, as they send you anything but what you ordered. Trying to justify growing it at all really looking at this years disastrous crop.

Quite right
We are one of the test dig growers this year.
Not seen the fieldsman in an age.
Looking at some fields it's hard to believe the yield loss will only be 5%.

Spoke with local fieldsman today asking that very question. Crops that are looking OK sort of sugars about normal. Those that are yellowish sugars 1 to 1.5% less. Root yields less in yellower crops. Not sure what the future holds as the leaves are yellow and not synthesising sugar as efficiently as no virus crops. Jury's out really. But Judgement Day is approaching!!

3 contracts all returned here... We are "stuck" in a 3 year deal anyway so no reason to delay. Adding nothing beyond that tonnage though.

Newark factory opened yesterday. Looking at the factory daily summary, sugars aren't overly high at an average of 16.24%.
Think I will leave ours in the ground for a bit longer.
Not sure how the past 24hr figure varies from the campaign average when it is the first day of opening. Thought they should be the same on day 1?

I
Are the sugars significantly down on previous years opening levels?

Just filling out my contract and enquired which seed varieties are still available so as not to waste time looking. Only 12 varieties out of the list of 20 left (paper version). Not all 20 shown online such as BTS1140 and KWS Advena.

How do you fill out the form online? I go to my British sugar portal go on the contract page and there appears to be nothing to click on to enter values🤔 this is on an iMac

Seemed quite straight forward (on windows). On mybritishsugar.com Have a look under ‘To do list’. One is your contract, other is seed varieties. Both have areas which you can fill in.

Thanks, on some websites IOS just doesn’t display/work the same way as windows. I haven’t even got a to do list on mine. I’ll have to ring them.

I wonder if the big growers (1000’s acres) get theirs first? They know they’re growing them what ever so get their order in on day one.

You are probably right. Partly my fault as should have done it sooner. Loss of enthusiasm for crop due to beet yellows virus!
Years ago you everyone seemed to get what they put in for no matter when they returned contract.

Last year I applied for vixen as soon as the window opened only to be told it had sold out. Posted the form back by return. I did wonder that maybe if I was Mr Big growing 10000 acres the outcome might have been different, or maybe be it comes down to speed of local postal service.
