sugar beet /fodder beet

Even if it’s a high DM beet, at say 20% DM, £45/t would be equivalent to buying meal at £225/t. Would you pay that for a 12 ME/12% CP ration?

I’d suggest that you would laugh at the feed rep.

I agree but it’s the lesser of two evils here this year, mediocre silage bales are £35- £40 , straw is £220 a ton, decent pit silage is £40 + per ton so just trying to keep cows quiet and on basic maintainance. Meal would be handy but want something to fill their bellies

Doesn’t sound great for the finances, whichever way you do it.:(

Does 20% DM beet, with it’s 80% water content, fill them up any better than the same quantity of DM as meal (85-90%), plus water from a trough and/or wet silage?:scratchhead:

I know what you mean but I thought the beet might keep them occupied for a bit longer, but maybe could do a combination of meal and beet.
Just trying to get through this winter without going broke:banghead:

Thanks for the replies everyone, thinking of trying a load, how long do they keep piled up?

They will stand a -5 for a few days.but...
Best to tip against wall or big bale clamp made in a " U " shape, go 10 ft wide then as long as required, leveling off into the corners and along the top to stop frost pockets...say 6 ft high.....cover over with old curtain sided lorry sheets use string to tie down from old hooks/ rollers onto bale, remembering to give a bit of slope to the top to aid water runoff...JOB DONE

My best has risen this year from £30 to £40P/T. That's collected from the grower, granted a good friend but I'm struggling to warrant that money and am thinking the same, is it not better invested in corn at £190 P/T with more in it for the cattle.

Pushed me to finally reseed with some red clover and chicory this spring to try and save some money...

I'm sure you could get them tipped in your yard cheaper than that from the beet growing areas.

I agree, I think at £45 it’s dear enough but it’s just another way to stretch silage, I bought 200 bales of ‘good’ silage but when we got the first load home it’s very wet, the water pisses out of the bottom of the feeder so need to put something in with it to add a bit of umph to it.
How much would rolled oats cost you ?

With beet and that silage they will really scour
