As above, does anyone know a timeline for the price announcement for next years crop. I would like to get on with planning next years rotation, but need to decide whether that will include Sugar Beet. I took a holiday this year.

Will, beet survive Brexit for long?
Don't know. BS were talking about markets outside of EU opening up now the quotas are finished. My hunch is that it won't make much difference . However thay will use Brexit as an excuse to pay less than they should.

Before Brexit I was confident price would be a fair bit up on this year, now I'm not so sure. However weak pound should be helping.

It's no wonder Tate & Lyle wanted us out, they will be able to import cane sugar me thinks.
What's the global price for sugar and can we compete.
Think there will no option this coming year, your in or out,for good.

I don't think you will be far out in your estimation Flat 10, unfortunately. I will have to give serious consideration to going all combinables. I almost always lose out on cleaning/carting due to soil type and location.
It's a shame many farmers carry on growing crops regardless of profitability. British Sugar know this to be so.
One of the most successful businessman I know locally will not entertain carrying out any business activity at a loss. Hence he has ceased farming in hand this year.
On a separate note I think Tate and Lyle are out of the sugar business now and only sell sweeteners.

I just checked up, looks like we are both correct.
Tate and Lyle Plc sold off their sugar refining in 2010. They sold it to American Sugar holdings who now own Tate and Lyle Sugars which as you say is the biggest sugar refiner in Europe.

Rumour mill here says local grower of ~ 1000t of energy beet for a digester has had all of his beet bought by BS for this year as they are so worried they will be short.........
Heard the same @Daniel @Sonoftheheir?
May be rubbish but would be interesting to know what they paid.
So they may well be running out as per post above.

I don't know of anyone growing energy beet, you can let land to grow maize round here, if you want them dragging the stuff off your land at Christmas, leaving a bog and then having to chase the rent payment...

The AD plant next to me will finish maize harvest tomorrow, no mess anywhere :scratchhead:. It's been about the same date they have finished the last 3 or 4 years I've been growing for them. Good payers too!
