Sugar beet yields

Heard today of some lifted not far from me, 21t a.c. 17.3 sugar.

Yields need to improve by 25-30% to make them a decent crop and at the moment that's not going to happen. Mine are stood still they've run out of moisture again.

Yield of this nature is where it needs to be and above to keep us interested, we only ever get 50% in with wheat after so you need to take that into account, they know farmers aren't stupid nowadays and neither are they. Beet is an ideal crop to keep a diverse rotation along with spuds , osr, v peas wheat barely and grass mono cropping too us is boring .Beet spreads risk as do spuds and keeps 2 of us occupied in winter . The machinery we have now makes 850ac of arable and a few stock a doodle between 2 full time and 1 part time Rarely are we looking at each other wondering what to do next and if that happens it's time for a rest/ holiday . it's not always about the money either , bored people and staff makes them more boring and lazy .business is only as good as its staff and you got to keeps variety. When all is done chasing highs and falling in the lows is for fools , we have a good av £ / ha we are not making millions but it all averages reasonable and that's what pays as well as keeping black grass down .People coming and going is what keeps a buzz / moaning going on be it contractor / haulier or Mach rep or mechanic .
Best wishes,[/QOTE]

53t/ha adjusted so far... heavy land. Not good. I think we were loosing yield on the last patch due to snapping below ground.

I put 90% of this down to the late drilling dates... hot summers are not unusual for beet on heavy ground.

When did you drill please? Sorry to hear so bad. Been hoping all year to try and get a 75t/ha average......
I snuck one bit in 8th April but that was light land (obviously) and suffered massively in the drought so I will be leaving until later. The rest was drilled 20-25 April ish.

All our beet was in by the end of April (last week of). This matches the BBRO data that you loose 10t/ha for every week lost in March for an October lift.

I am of the opinion that they won't put much weight on now given the year that they have had and it would be better to get them out asap!

Very noticeable that near trees and hedges the beet is dying again. Wilted flat to the ground. Away from these areas it's holding its own but not really making much headway.

Not often you harvest in a dust storm and trailers leave no mark. Yield isn't too bad here. Smallish roots but high seed rate has helped. Very good establishment so they are all there which helps.

Will have better idea of yield when I get loads away and weights back. Buts it looking about average.

Changed from 20" to 18" rows this year.

Have spent a lot time time messing about with the Cyclone wheel settings to get it to fit down the rows for opening up.

Ones those changes where I almost wish I hadn't bothered. Haven't lost so much in the tramlines as the sprayer is fixed at 72". I reckon yield has been helped by narrower row width due to more plants per hectare without being so crowded in the row. Maybe.

As you say Dr Wazzock, the beet are using up the moisture from each rainfall event (8-12mm) in a week to ten days.
I have never seen this effect before. Next year the fields will be all yellow by now without any neonics, so the problem won’t arise!
