How many horses needed for 4m machine? Light soils, but some hills
Running ours on heavy land but mainly flat with a valtra T214, easy going really sitting around 1500rpm at 9k from what I remember. First year going with it so lots to learn from the drill and system (system more!).

Hope you're getting on ok with it so far. I have a 2013 6m. If you haven't already I would get the brackets to extend the stagger on yours as well as buying a set of new type legs (cranked forward away from coulter leg). That mod on ours has drastically improved the performance, we've run the mods since 2016 I think.

how are you finding this drill in small fields? Doesn't look too maneuverable
Not found it too bad. The fields we have are a pain anyway in many ways, from 3 acres up to 23 acres sizes vary and often not a straight edge but we have what we have and it works. Had only been leaving a 12m headland this last year but might up it to 16 for some fields this next season. I mean it's still quicker than a 3m combination with front power Harrow even if it does take a min more to turn.

DTS user here for 4/5 years 4m trailed with 250hp runs well, generally run 8-10kmh, absolutely love the drill. We are on heavy clay and it does a great job, the seed placement and consolidation is brilliant. Generally run the front time depending on season and ground conditions 3/6 inch below seed depth.

Sorry to Hijack the thread but wanted an opinion from DTS users.

First year for me pulling a DTS and wondering how much life is left in these leading legs?
Apologies for the strange angles, took the pics with the drill folded up

Was thinking about either building up with some hard facing or trying out those weld on pieces from the Ferobide Tungsten chap that's added me on Facebook

@Dukes Fit I’d be running those for a while yet until the tungsten had all but gone. I’ve never tried to weld anything onto ours, just fit new legs but I’m not on particularly abrasive soil so a set of legs lasts at least a year.

Thanks for replying @Wheatland, you can see they're fairly decent on top but like knives on the bottom and one is bent. Not the best of pictures but I'll be doing some work on it tomorrow so I'll get some better pictures of it when its unfolded. Thinking if I caught them now and beefed them up while there's still some metal to weld to that they'd last a good bit longer especially if I put Ferobide on the leading face and ran a few beads of hard facing along the side. These have done 800ha I think.
Drill is new to me so still finding my way round it

Got a fairly good price from Spaldings for total replacement legs.

On a side note got to replace the seed/fert pipes from the tank to the distribution heads as the seed one has eaten itself.

When I ran a DTS i would wear the legs down to about 5cm of Tungsten left on the front and the metal above the tungsten had started to wear away a curve. Then I spent some time in the winter cutting the bottoms off and bought the new weld on lower leg parts, welded them on and put a bit of hard facing on the sides. Worked quite well.

Out of interest what sort of price are the replacement legs ?
We have only had ours 1 season so haven't had to look at new ones yet
Thanks

Bit of life left in those legs yet, I used to weld some hard facing on the side of the legs behind the tips just to sop the leg wearing thin and snapping off in field conditions with stones up here.

More than happy for this to be asked and hijacked! I’m still learning too and it’s a good question to ask.

Been having a look at the first field of winter wheat I sowed with the drill this morning with the agronomist and given it was into wet spring barley the point there was a lot of mud and the 10 or so flooding the field has had since overall I’m impressed.

We don't appear to have a DTS users thread so would be nice if we could use this as a thread to share tips, tricks and ideas.

@green giant I've got exactly that on one leg just now, a clean break just above the level of the Coulter. Might put a new one on there and get some weld on lowers to keep as spares

What settings are people using the rear covering discs on?
I've got mine set on the narrowest width and angled full in.
Was getting some seed on then surface/not covered so have put the seeding leg in about 10mm deeper but been stopped by weather since.
Does the narrow setting on the covering discs pull soil in closer to the back of the leg or would a wider pull gather more soil in?

Drilling in to spring barley stubble, front legs are 5” below seeding coulter doing around 10k. @SteveE @Wheatland @R J @green giant

We never move the position of the covering discs. I think they are in the widest position. I suppose the need to alter these would depend on soil type and forward speed. The only time I feel the covering discs aren’t doing enough is planting spring beans with a 1” coulter. I almost always roll at an angle using levelling board to fill in the slots.
