Son is wanting a Sumo DTS drill and I’m looking for opinions. We have a heavy ish farm in North East uk
Have a whole range of equipment already to do the job but looking at more min til to ease time pressure at drilling and as our only employee is nearing retirement and won’t be replaced , son needs to manage the job himself ideally.
We have plough powerharrow Vaderstadt drill set up, sumo trio, carrier and combi drill already ( to cover all eventualities !)

a 3m DTS is just about affordable (?) and would strip drill rather than direct drill

I’m concerned about the row spacing which look about 12”-13” Think the 3m has 9 coulters ?

how do people feel about them ??

If you go to the DD section and search back , it's all been talked about before .
Have drilled all my crops for 8 years with DTS so know abit about the pros and cons .
Can answer any questions , just PM me if you like but I am currently off to bed as 3am starts at mo , spraying to beat heat/ wind

Thanks Oscar. I did “search” but obviously didn’t scroll back far enough. I’ll go take a look
Good luck spraying

Few threads there to keep you busy, I used to run a 3m at a previous job, probably answered most questions somewhere in the above threads.

What size tractor do you have, and are you on many steep hills?

We have a few steep hills
Wanting to put the drill onto the JD 6215R

the bigger tractors use too much diesel
We go up to a JD 8530
So have plenty of tractor power

We demoed a DTS in 2015 alongside a Mzuri, and bought the Mzuri. Haven't regretted it. Might be worth looking into, a mounted one would be most cost effective although the trailed ones offer quite a bit more.

Got rid of our 4.8m last yr, it worked well direct putting ww into any stubble. We are not on anything too heavy but still needs plenty of hp on the front depending on how deep you put the legs in. Struggles putting osr into lots of chopped straw with stones and wet chopped straw, would block up alot but would get there in the end. Great for anything a bit paddled without flatlifting in front. Very good for putting beans in. Have missed it a bit esp after sp oats, lime spreaders and trailers had been and paddled the stubble abit so had to go through with lds then roll and then drill rather then just putting the dts through. Also good for putting sp barley in early in sp rather than wait for dd. The front tank with either dd or dts toolbar looks good.

Put a rapid lift on front of vaddy and convert to 3 rows coulters ,
had a dts demo last back end ,
very heavy ,
blocked up in the bean stubble but it was beginning november as waited for it coming , and was sticky enough ,
the wheat has grown but is one of best fields on farm ,looks well ,not sure on wide rows ,will see when binder through it
did 17 acre behind beet , and had 5 mm after lifting , if had followed harvester would of been better but was shoot day so no go , its not looks wise as good as other half , what was shakerator and combin5 days earlier , combine will tell us

am in proccess of putting metcalfe or bourgault in a trailed cultivator ,and pull it behind shakerator and feed it from a front hopper for the Dts type drilling ,

Regarding row spacing, we run a Mzuri ProTil and the spacing is no issue, in fact I think my spec weights have improved.

Mzuri is a cracking drill and company to deal with.

Get on really well with our little dts and it works for me. Noticed the soil structure improvement / evenness of crop and significant fuel saving but its not a wet weather drill, it will smear.
Wide spacing seems open when you look from the combine but we’ve had our best yields.
I seem to be suffering late germ b’grass in wheat perhaps due to reduced competition so have been trying to scratch a chit once after harvest. Bought a vaderstad off a forum member to experiment with closer spacing for 2nd wheats and spring wheat seedbeds. Photos of some wheat/osr/beans
