Sunburned teats

Never had this happen before. Had to get a cow and calf in Friday, she was being a bit kicky with the calf so suspected the start of mastitis, flies were absolutely horrific during the really hot days in spite of pour on and garlic licks. Not flies - her front teats were pretty badly sunburned, and her nose.

She is my only cow SimX, with a pink udder, all others are AAX with black udders. Stood quietly in the crush while I wiped her down with cool soapy water and tubed her, must have been agony out in the heat. Her whole bag was touchy and warm, tender from banging against her back legs. Grateful to have caught it before an infection got hold. In for a week now with udder balm twice a day. Calf happy and bucking around this morning.

The sun has been really, really fierce and caught us out too while fencing, burnt arms. Felt like I was being lasered or something.

Is the cow photosensitive rather than just sunburnt ?

As @Kidds says, they eat something which gives them a nasty reaction to UV light. Result looks like extreme sunburn which then goes a deep red /purple bruising.

You did the right thing in bringing her in right away and keeping her in 'til she gets over it.
