Sunday Is Always The Worst Day For Disasters

We had what has probably been our worst case of Dog attack today with 12 dead and 25 injured, all in lamb ewes and what were our best pure bred ewes we use for ram breeding out of a batch of 120.

Phone rang at 8.00 am and a person who overlooked the field said there were dead sheep everywhere.
When two of us arrived at the field the culprits were still there, an Alsatian and an Alsatian cross. Luckily we managed to shoot both of them and even more luck, one had a collar with an address and phone number.

The field was absolute carnage and the dogs had obviously been there all night, seven of the sheep were still alive but too badly injured to save so we shot them. Then we had to organise Vets, a lorry to load up the walking injured to take back to treat and a loader tractor and trailer to collect all the dead ones.

For once the police were there in a short time and apart from the Control Room telling me to put the gun away before they arrived or they would not stop, they were very helpful and took pictures of all the dead sheep and dead dogs and went off to find the owner.

Now the owner is a multi millionaire who has already had one lot of dogs put down some 4 years previously when they attacked and killed their own sheep and two neighbours. Then recently they got these two latest ones, which had killed a neighbours sheep about two months ago but were not caught in the act. Then they were caught a couple of weeks ago on another farm and this was reported to the police who were investigating. All the previous attacks the man has bought his way out of the problem. This time it will not be happening as we intend to try to get the police and courts to stop this man from ever owning dogs again.

I went to the house with the dead dogs and left them on the lawn outside the front door. He sent his Polish maid to come and speak to me, which didn't go down well. He did eventually come to see me but no apology came.
The total cost of this just to us without the Police and court time will be in excess of £20k.

What annoys me is that amount will be back pocket money to this guy. He has no idea about the amount of distress and disruption this has caused.

So sorry to hear about this, it’s a terrible loss. I wonder if the police will prosecute, or whether you might have to take civil action?

I'e been here and it nearly broke me. I feel for you and I feel the rage. For some people it could financially ruin them. What' always the worst is the owners reaction of trying to et out or not comprehending how wrong they are.

Stick it to him and make it hurt as much as you can.

Don't know what to say @Frank-the-Wool ---it just gets worse
Name and shame publicly is the only thing i can think of to make them change attitude

Good luck in getting him banned from ever keeping dogs again---pity he can't be locked up somehow

That's appalling - I'm so sorry you've had this happen - it must be the most awful thing to have happen to a shepherd or farmer and so needless. I do hope that the dogs' owner get some proper punishment.

Like everyone else, I'm very sorry this has happened.

I've had people complain to me for having sheep in my field, because it spoils their walk having to keep dogs under close control.

Oddly enougth the only time, I've lost a ewe to dogs it was out in the country, in a field with no paths.

There are certain people who will buy a house out in the country, away from roads, with the intention of just letting their dogs run free.

I was visiting my brother last week & teaching my neice to ride her bike & had a scary encounter with a nasty Boxer dog,no harm done but it haunts me.

This needs to stop. Get this story in the newspapers, spread online social media. This bloke can’t get away with this.

Well yes this will be the way to progress this. By coincidence the NFU were already planning to have a lot of publicity this week in Sussex, more targeted at the South Downs, but at least this will get the media excited and much increase the coverage.
This individual buys himself lots of publicity locally, so he won't like the media coverage.
