Super market contract

Has anyone any experience with supermarket contracts for beef. Currently we sell to a dealer then he will send for slaughter the following day. Iam not to sure how we work the finances out as my grandad deals with that. To me somebody’s losing out through this system and it’s certainly not the slaughter house and most likely not the dealer we sell them to which leaves us. With my grandad stuck in his ways (as a lot of the older generation are) trying to convince him that there is an alternative which would benefit us if rather difficult. Just wondered how people find supermarkets to deal with and whether it’s worth while making that move. Also if any one had any emails or phone numbers for contacts to get hold of somebody that would be much appreciated. Cheers all.

I am not sure if there are any direct contracts from supermarket to farmer, more likely processor to farmer, or dealer.
For example I have one for Aberdeen Angus to Kepak, but its a very loose contract and not really worth the paper its written on, and certainly not one you would want to build a business on, but it does mean that I get a premium for the Angus I send so long as they are in spec.
But in your situation just send them direct, it cuts out the middleman, not sure you will get any more for them though.

We do send them live, just seems like we are losing out somewhere with transportation cost etc. And charge for keeping overnight before they go the following morning

You do not need a supermarket contract.

You can sell direct to the likes of Dunbia/ ABP / Woodheads etc yourself, you can even deliver them yourself if you want to.. ( all the above then sell to the supermarkets etc.

Most farmers use an agent who normally is the local livestock haulier, you book your cattle into him and he will sort the rest, if you send to the above for example you will NOT pay anything to the haulier yourself, the company's above will send you the kill sheet and pay you direct but take off the haulage etc then pay you the balance.

The agent will give you the base price when you book them in. ( ask them to email the payment grid to you )

You certainly should not be paying the dealer an overnight charge!

You will need to be farm assured to send to the above.

Best way would be to speak to the local farmers and find out what agents/ hauliers they are using and where the cattle go.
