You mention their colour in relation to eye trouble in the heat. After foot n mouth in 01, we visited family friends who run a big Hereford stud nr Glen Innes in Aus. The very first thing I had to do was help them cut a cancerous growth out a cows eye. Crush/ scalpel/ bit of dairy dry cow tube, back to the field. No vet etc, dealt with and done !

The ultimate suckler cow!!

Cheap to keep, good temperament. Cross well with a Simmental to produce a good suckler cow that crosses well with any bull. It's a mystery they haven't spread further around the UK.

I wonder if they'd make a good hill cow?

I enquired and unfortunately you can't import SA semen to the UK

Looks like I should have got my tail down to Ashford on Tuesday as the small entry forward made low prices. No photos anywhere to judge the stock for sale

I went on the Sussex website to buy some semen to bull some Limmie heifers . Most of the bulls were from many years ago and didn't seem much good, so I bulled the heifers with AA.

Sussex cattle are excellent, some of the finest tasting beef I've ever had was Sussex, I think the bull was Elmbridge Intellegent. The breed society need to get into the 21st century if they are going to keep the breed going, in fact they would do well to get into the 20th century for a start.

Sussex cattle are becoming extinct because of the clueless/hopeless Sussex cattle society.

Hopefully after we leave Europe, the restrictions for us to import straws from outside the EU will be lifted. The Sussex cattle Society have tried hard to bring in new bloodlines from Australia and Africa without success.

There are more pedigree Sussex now than probably any time in their history......... so hardly becoming extinct !

The Queen has the largest herd in the UK at The Royal Farms at Windsor.

I am really surprised you could not find some excellent seaman from the Sussex cattle Society. The Sussex bull that Genus use for straws is so yesterday, but there is better straws available.

PM me personally and I will put you in touch with the correct people.

Thanks Wooly I'll get in touch next year when I want some Sussex semen.

JP1 your post shows the way Sussex are going. It looks like the stock went for killing prices and I don't like the look of the champion bull. Maybe a poor picture but maybe not.

And if I had anything to do with the Sussex society I wouldn't want Genus to be using their very poor Friths General 3rd.

The Sussex Society have written to Genus to try to get them to remove and not use their poor quality Sussex bull, but without success.

Unfortunately that is why Genus don’t sell many Sussex straws, but there are far better bull straws available elsewhere.

That's one of the reasons

I emailed their customer service to ask about AI for Sussex or Belted Galloway or Whitebred Shorthorn (they manage the RBST semen bank for the latter ). I got sent a holding email but haven't heard back since . A local Angus friend told me he doubted they'd come out. Now the thing is , I realise I live in a low stock density area but surely the WBS at least even in high stock areas would only get the odd AI service request

The Sussex Society and the Belted Galloway society have some good bulls (as far as I can see) and it's a shame there's not the infrastructure to start with a few and build up pedigree numbers

I agree about the winning bull and I didn't go see the cows but surely there would be something value that took my eye
