Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) pilot

Eleanor Parker is an MSc student at Harper Adams University, currently undertaking a Masters research project jointly with AHDB (https://www.harper-adams.ac.uk/research/project/1294/ahdb-sustainable-farming-incentive-project). The project looks at how farmers are adapting or planning for changes ahead in agricultural policy in England and farmers’ views on the impact of the new schemes that are being rolled out. At this stage, the project is seeking participants for interviews of no more than 60 minutes via phone or Zoom. To compensate for the time spent on the interview, an Amazon voucher of £25 will be offered/emailed to the participant after the interview.

If you are going to take part in the SFI pilot this autumn, are you willing to be interviewed?

If yes, please reply to this thread or please email Mr Nigel Hill at [email protected] or Eleanor Parker [email protected] directly to participate. Thank you.

By the lack of response I am not sure anyone signed up!

I think I must have been looking at a different scheme to you lot! The sfi application, providing your fields are on the rlr correctly, is less than an hours work. As for the change in farming practice you may find that you’re doing most/all of it anyway. The cherry on the cake for me is that defra are not looking to enforce anything in the first year as we all learn what’s expected/practical and they also pay monthly for my time to give feedback. Admittedly I don’t know how much of my time is expected for that bit but I can guarantee it’s the most money per hour I’ll ever make. Unfortunately, grant applications are a part of modern Agriculture; however small a contribution they make.

I looked at the pilot but did not apply for several reasons including low payment rates, lack of time to apply at my busiest time of year and unacceptable compromises to my farming system.
Annoys me that most farm paper work is to fill out through busy times of the year sfp form and stewardship is all to do between March and June when there’s lambing, calving and other spring work to do. Plenty wet days and dark nights through winter to sit in the office.

So as it’s a 3yr contract and they can change it as they see fit and the farmer takes the backdated shafting….

In the pilot scheme but must admit have I only now have a small acreage the attraction was the 5k initially. If I had been farming like I was 3 year ago with 370 acres it would not have been worth the hassle even though I was doing most of the stuff anyway.
