Swimming pool help

I know not farming related but farmers are a resourceful bunch hence asking the question. My grandfather hand dug out a pool in the farmhouse garden in the 50’s. It was last used around 20 years ago but as it’s made out of concrete had badly cracked and leaked a bit. It was covered over and left. Now I’ve got children I’m wondering about seeing if it could be sorted out. It’s 9.2m long by 3.6m wide x a tapered but average of 1.5m deep.

what do you reckon? Re concrete on top of the existing concrete, or break existing off and start with the original hole again? Or fit a purpose built liner which I’ve had a very rough indicative cost of about £6500 installed with a 10 year warranty. A thinner liner would drop the price to around £2500 but only a year warranty. They tell me thinner liners last upto 10 years for domestic use while the thick one should be 20 years.

I know all about the running costs and hassles of pools so don’t need any moaners. Just looking for the build side of things advice. We’ve still got the old pumps/heater elements and covers etc.

DON’T even think about a pool. . .

fill it in & plant a garden or lawn over the top of it, or a fire pit / outdoor entertainment / bbq area

An uncle, a civil engineer by profession, bricked up the doorway of a WWII air raid shelter that was built into a steep bank. Not very grand and I assume there was more to it construction-wise but I remember his family getting a lot of pleasure out of it. They don't have to be Olympic sized.

For all you know, that could be my wife, sister, mother . . .

I’m not sure why those sort of comments are necessary

I doubt many of the TFF keyboard warriors have bodies like Adonis either . . .
Climb down off your high horse, its a photo placed on facebook so its hardly beyond comment. What odds if your related to them they don't appear to have a disability nor was I commenting on a disability. Anywhoo that front bale needs a tweek with a Hiab and the telehandler in the back round seems to be parked up.

Not on any high horse or personally offended in any way - just thought your comment was juvenile, stupid & not necessary to the subject . . .

the post was about a pool, anyway

As kids we used to swim in the river. You have to wear your jam shoes in else you'd have cow muck in between your toes. Sliding down the weir into the river at Hammoon. Nary a clip board in sight those days.
Yeah we used to, but you hear of a lot of deaths now people swimming in canals and rivers

We have a pool, pretty much exactly as OP describes. Simplest thing would be concrete over existing cracked base so all smooth, then put in a liner, maybe even an underlay if concerned re rough edges. Ours is 12 x 6 and a new lining was circa 5k, fitted, 4 years back. The pool used to run on heating oil and was totally uneconomical, it's heated off the biomass now and is a joy for the kids.
