Swollen ear in ram

As above, probably had a bite, or more likely a knock. A bit like a rugby player's ear, it will probably end up shrivelled, although it might fill will with fluid and burst out first.

Draining it might help with the obvious discomfort, and keep flies off the wound after draining/bursting.

Had one here in a ewe a couple of weeks ago - swollen to the size of a golf ball and she was quite subdued. Cut out the tag and it bled a fair bit which seemed to take the pressure off. Weaned her lambs and gave her Crovect over the back of the head in case it was caused by flies annoying her, jab of LA in case there was an infection and then let her go. The ear still droops, but she’s doing much better now.

a mite in the ear. Plunge dipping would sort it, pour ons don’t. The sooner you lance it the better.

And before any clever bugger asks, the mite makes them shake their ears excessively which leads to burst blood vessels. Bites or knocks cause it as well, the burst blood vessel being the common thread.

I suspect that’s what happened with mine, albeit from head flies rather than mites. Only one in the group succumbed, and Crovect (5ml on back of head) appears to have sorted things.
