The Sprays and Sprayers Arena is a key highlight for many visitors to Cereals every year, showcasing the latest innovations and application technology. We aim to bring the arena to life through the digital world of Cereals LIVE 2020. It is a critical time for UK farmers, tasked with improving the efficiency and accuracy of chemical sprays. When making large investments into new spraying equipment it is vital that they choose the correct machine for farm size, terrain and type of crops grown.

FSOOTY 2020

Syngenta’s Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year Award is a competition with one goal: to find the best Farm Sprayer Operator in the UK. The search for the 2020 winner has been underway for many months, with entries from so many highly knowledgeable and experienced sprayer operators.

Although these are challenging times, it only seems right to honour the time and dedication of our finalists to continue as planned and announce the winner at Cereals LIVE 2020. We aim to host the awards ceremony online on Wednesday 10th June from the virtual Sprays and Sprayers Arena.

Spray Assist App hits the target

Syngenta Spray Assist is a new App created to help sprayer operators to select the most appropriate application techniques for different crops, situations and timings on-the-fly.

The simple to use app links to live local weather data, to analyse the factors that influence accurate application and potential risk of spray drift, including wind, rain or frost. The app suggests techniques to enable sprayer operators to mitigate risks or alter practices.

Spray Assist utilises data and provides guidance for:

  • 16 different crop types
  • Over 45 application timings and targets
  • More 10 leading nozzle manufacturers
  • Over 600 different nozzle types
Launching Spray Assist at Cereals LIVE 2020 (10 June 2020), Syngenta Application Specialist, Harry Fordham, highlighted the potential for digital technology to provide up to date decision support solutions.

Crop types covered include cereals; oilseed rape; potatoes; maize and vegetable crops, with advice on applications including different fungicide timings; weed control - at pre-, peri-; autumn or spring post-emergence; insecticides and desiccation.

“Syngenta application trials research has shown the potential for even small tweaks in sprayer set-up and operation to make significant differences in results achieved, including grass weed control and fungicide treatments,” advised Harry.

“Sprayer operators also play a huge role in managing the potential risk of spray drift - to ensure sprays hit the intended target and give the best performance,” he added.

“Spray Assist will further help them make better informed decisions and tailor their application techniques to optimise results.”

Users can enter plans for cropping, locations, and product use and application timings. Further personalising the data with the farm’s application equipment enables advanced algorithms to provide guidance on the most appropriate available sprayer setup in any selected situation, for the forecasted weather conditions.

Selecting a proposed spray time up to four days in advance, the app will indicate if conditions are likely to be best to spray; if spraying could be undertaken - possibly with suggested mitigating measures - or if the application is not advisable.

With planned spraying operations for specific crops and treatment targets, the Spray Assist will suggest the most appropriate nozzle selections and sprayer operation, adjusting speed and water volume, for example, to deliver the best possible results.

Spray Assist is free to download now from the App Store or Google Play. Registered users will receive free updates as they are developed and released.

The new app is one of a suite of application tools developed by Syngenta as part of the New Farming Technologies initiative, to harness the future potential for digital agriculture.

For Cereals LIVE 2020 we will be showcasing exciting new varieties and pioneering agronomy

We’ve brought the whole package of innovation, advice and interaction to our virtual Cereals stand. The knowledge of the Syngenta technical team and specialists is accessible to everyone, and an essential visit during Cereals LIVE 2020. We will have four key areas you can discover on our website:

There’s a host of new varieties to explore in Growing for End Markets. That includes the exceptional high-yielding hard feed wheat, SY INSITOR. The new hybrid barley, SY KINGSBARN that is proving to be an easy to grow all-rounder, and the winter malting barley ELECTRUM, which has received MBC approval for brewing.

Syngenta’s focus on Rooting & Establishment aims to ensure you can get your crop off to a strong start.

Vibrance Duo is now registered for both winter and spring barley. The renowned #VibranceEffect that’s transformed wheat establishment, can now boost barley rooting too. Seed and soil-borne disease protection, to promote fast emergence and early development, helps to build more resilient crops – better able to cope with any season.

As growers look to establish crops quicker in the autumn, the potential threat of BYDV looms large. Syngenta webinars and videos will provide essential guidance, along with a new BYDV Assist App to be launched this summer to tackle the challenge.

When it comes to herbicide choices, find out from our Grassweed Experts how to develop a strategic approach that combines proactive tactical control, with a long-term view of sustainable weed population management.

Learn in-depth research and practical experience from our Barton Black-grass and Doncaster Ryegrass Innovation Centres. Both sites have investigated the crucial importance of accurate application to ensure the best levels of product efficacy.

Formulation has a major impact on how a product behaves in the pack, in the tank, and on the crop. Explore New Farming Technologies for an interactive insight into Product Technology and the science that optimises active ingredients’ performance to maximise crop yield.

Gain an insight into sprayer set up for accurate application, including how boom height, forward speed and tyre pressure can have huge benefits to efficacy.

The new Spray Assist App uses Syngenta’s expertise to give advice and information around nozzle selection, ensuring that whatever your target and whatever weather conditions, you will use the best nozzle for the job.

All these elements pull together in a Sustainability Hub, including the latest results from the whole-farm rotation study of Sustainable Farming and Conservation Agriculture. Hear from all those defining initiative within sustainability, including researchers, agronomists and farmers. The findings of this project could change the way you farm in the future.

Wilderness Lighting's very popular Compact 4 LED lights have now been fitted with blue LEDS. This allows you to spray at night with the confidence that if a nozzle is not performing correctly you will be able to identify it quickly. The two high powered Compact 4 lights are mounted onto the sprayer boom to illuminate along the length to effectively highlight each nozzle and it's spray pattern. The contrast in colour of the blue light and the water/chemical from the nozzles makes it much easier to spot a problem compared to using conventional white lights.
