System Moore

I think you should cross subsidise in this case, having 6m allows you to do the other job. You need to keep the crops right and then the job is easy. The drill can be budgeted for over 10 years at low usage. If looking at the new jd pro series opener then you would have naff all to do on it for 15 years on a low area and yet it more than likely would still be very desirable kit.

I had a moore as an entry into no-till, it's significantly not as good as the jd and I guess the gd. Monetise the difference in efficacy at £10 acre and it more than covers the interest on the capital cost.

Whilst the JD is superior to the Moore you’re forgetting that the OP is having a knee jerk reaction to the dry conditions at the moment and hasn’t yet achieved the most important factor in no till and that is getting his head completely around the concept. As such he might be well advised not to spend too much capital until he has proved the principals to himself before he buys a new drill.

Had a contractor with a JD750a in last year, so not completely new to it ;) ( although it did prove to be a financial disaster on the 100 acres I tried ) I still like the concept and therefore looking at it again. :) I think the only knee jerk bit is that the drill is available so has brought forward my thinking a year :scratchhead:

Not really, Nov drilled after 10 year HLS grass, a lot of rain, dykes not working well after sheep and cattle messing about in them and then the hot dry Spring/summer with copious wireworm, it probably would have tested most systems of establishment tbh.
Did plough 15 acre for S Barley, that only did 1.5t/a as well, didn't rain from drilling til harvest

We'll see what this year brings, its all had the subsoiler, it was so rippled with wheelings 8kph and you left the tractor seat, its a lot better for travelling now, but did seem a shame to rip it up, but it was nearly impossible to get a spade into it last Christmas, you can now.

To dry, anything resembling stubble or a bit of trash and its bunging up, its stupidly dry here, theres just nothing for the discs to cut into.
Just as a note of caution, I finished off a field of second wheat drilling for my neighbour as her Sky drill was suffering like a Vad would ie bulldozing through lack of “bite” the discs are very similar on both machines after all...

The Borgault equipped Sprinter finished off the field fine !!

40mm of rain in 2 days has changed it from a dust bowl to porridge at the mo

Keeping options open still, might just Metcalf up the Freeflow and spend a bit on RTK

Was this in to worked ground or stubble?

I

It was into a long stubble on puffy light soil

The drill has worked very well this year to be fair, this was a bit of a odd situation last year...

Direct into the stubble? Having the serrated discs stall sounds peculiar unless the coulter was set too tight to the disc.
