Hi all. Thank you for your words of wisdom, it is greatly appreciated. So to be clear, the reason for applying Skyway is solely as a protectant against yellow rust?
I think Skyway could be described as a “broad spectrum” fungicide with some activity against most wheat diseases. I suspect your agronomist is recommending it because in his experience the weather is unpredictable and if it starts raining, in his professional opinion, your crop will benefit from the protective activity of the material he has chosen. It could be argued he has used a product which is “too expensive”. As a point of information our independent agronomist is currently suggesting we apply a broad spectrum fungicide at T1, according to him, we will be spending approx £10/acre. Given the unpredictability of the weather, the forward pricing of wheat (£180/t) I don’t think this is difficult to justify. If you are interested in the detail here’s a good place to read. https://projectblue.blob.core.windo...020/Fungicide performance 2020 (17.12.20).pdf

No. Its a broad spectrum product, containing ingredients with different strengths. I'm going to disagree and say that if you have a good crop with good potential and particularly if you are in the wetter west and you have little inclination or understanding to walk the crop yourself then its probably quite a good recommendation. Yes you could save £10/ha maybe say, by mixing yourself but if its not your area of speciality then its not out of the way.

So many ways to skin a cat with fungicides in a relatively low disease pressure year. There may be septoria knocking around in the base so he’s using an sdhi to keep a lid on it, especially if he’s seen an unsettled period rainwise. Costello has a 9 for y rust, so I wouldn’t be adding the extra teb. We haven’t been told what rate he’s advised. 0.8 rate would be light for that product, but would come in at around the £11 / acre mark (depending on how the OP buys his Chem) but as the post was 29th April, it may not be applied until May. Flag leaf is usually Out around the 20th may in most crops, so 3 weeks persistence is all that would be needed before a T2. Spend on fungicides in a low disease pressure year will cost more from now on. Personally I would have done pretty much Opus Bravo across the board as a T1 on my WW this year were they still available possibly with som Azoxy in on the rustier varieties. Agronomist is damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t sometimes.

With the current forecast looking pretty unsettled I put some epoxi and teb on, a small number of plants have leaf three unrolled but crop is very short so any septoria about will have been splashed up on leaf four and the tip of leaf three, got to use up the epoxi so thought might as well get some protection from it,if crop stays clean then might be able to stretch the next pass to T2 if not then decide what to do depending on what the weather has done.
