we have alpha numerical system. as in this years heifers are C1 C2 etc. Can tell the age at a glance without too much info on them.
We do something similar heifers bulled in 2013 are 300s and so on.

We have electronic tags too and people ask why we bother with management tags but find them useful when picking out cows and calves as they both get same management tag. Management tag has ministry number on it also.

We only have 100 cows so it'd easy to know them all, and generally know the age within a year or so from their official number.
you breed your own replacements though? We buy in and they can come from different farms so numbers can be all over, hopefully got one farm to keep buying off now though so long as they dont put too many to the friesain bull! We only have 60 and I can recognise most (as proved by an inspection when some had no ID in anywhere and I still got them all right and the inspector ticked them off our print out as I shouted them out because he noticed they had management tags!) but its easy with them having management tags so anyone knows what im talking about when I talk about a particular cow too and we put the same number tag in the calf now too so we can see they are both ok together and get both out easily if theres a problem with either one or the other.

Yes it will be more difficult to know numbers when you buy in, along with it taking a year or so to get to know the cows themselves, but well done for knowing them for your inspection!(y)

We tend to know the cows by the last 3 or 4 digits of their official number and then write that along with the sire on the management part of the calf's official tag.

Good that you have a system that is working for you.
