Talk me out of a new Hilux

Currently use a new type BMW 3 series. It is up for change next year. While I really like the car, it is not the most practical for farming and going up the odd farm track.

I am toying with the idea of moving to a crew cab pick up like the Hilux or Ranger.

While I know it won't be at the same level in terms of handling, a pick up would be much more robust and practical.
My only concern is comfort, would the pick up be a big step back in terms of comfort?
We have two little girls (5 & 9) and we generally go abroad on holidays once a year (France).

Would the pick up be a runner for long journeys like that? (fuel consumption aside).
I had a Range Rover sport before my Invincible, as you say the handling isnt quite the same, but is still fine. And in terms of long distance I find it's perfectly comfortable.

That's a good recommendation, the RR would be top level in terms of comfort. Thanks.

The range rover was comfy, but the hilux is not far off it. And the Range Rover was massively unreliable. The air suspension, and 500hp supercharged engine made it great fun to drive. But overall I'd always have the Invincible over another range rover.

I recall an old Australian advert which went something along the lines of:

"If you want to go walkabout in the outback, you can take the Discovery or the Landcruiser. If you want to come back, you take the Landcruiser"......

Either in Afghanistan or Africa its always a Hilux with a heavy machine gun mounted on the back or a pile of gunmen hanging of it with their AK47's. I rest my case !!

Why do you want to be talked out of a Hilux?.. without doubt they are to most "fit for purpose Pick up/Ute out there...current spec machines are far more comfortable.. drive exceptionally well and here in NZ, since their launch, have beaten Ford in the league tables, or been within 20 units in others. When it comes to selling them, I know which will be the hardest on the pocket.. been there-done that...got the badge... Over here Ford is a one-trick pony...cant give cars except Ranger away....on the way to the slippery slope

Any idea what the wait is for a new one at the moment?
Last time I was wandering round the dealers all the cards in the windows said over 6 months?

I guess it might depend on who's asking.

Have a 2010 HL2 (2.5) now with 197k on the clock. New discs and pads last week , prop shaft center bearing last year , bit of corrosion appearing around the rear wheel arches now. Drives great no squeaks or rattles from interior and engine still pulls well.

I drove my new Hilux out of the dealers on 1st September 1998, it's now just clocked 250k miles. It gets one service a year when it goes for an MOT. Other than a rear diff and a new steering rack, it's been faultless. It's never spent a night inside and shows little signs of rust, although it has carted several thousand litres of diesel, with the odd spillage, which has probably helped to stop any corrosion

Make sure it’s the 2.8 engine not the 2.4 because the 2.4 is crap.

3.0l HL3 bought new in 2008 had done 220,000 by the time it was replaced in 2017.
It’s been kept as a spare truck and has had very little in terms of replacement parts. Up until it was 7 years old it had only ever had a pair of window wipers.

So consensus is bullet proof even in a working farm environment, crap customer service in uk and to get wax oiled. Prices are keen, without vat and with 19% MVf discount quoted just shy of £21k that’s a manual in white truck cab. Paid £31k in 2004 for the Disco so it gets even better. Delivery March next year, Is the auto reliable and does it suit the truck?

I keep hearing semi conductor shortage. Don’t know if it’s right. Fella told me the other day that there is even a wait for a new Ranger.
