On travels in uk I notice wooden buildings with a tar on them . This must be a uk thing as we never see it here.

I have a post and rail creosoted fence i put up about 4 years ago . I bought "creosote" to paint it 2 years ago as the dark colour was fading. Its not the real creosote that i could buy years ago only some environmently safe stuff and it did not give me the dark colour i wanted

What is that tar like to apply . presume its solid and and has to be melted. Life time job I would think?

Ah, the good old 50/50 certainly does the job & has a not unpleasant odour to it! Grandad also used to add in some tar when painting tin sheets - we still have some up from 50+ years ago that was second hand when he did it.
