I'd say Maris Bard taste better than some off your list, lifting nice size here now. Your question poses an interesting one though, modern varieties are bred for yield/uniformity/appearance/ "suitability" for the multiples, no suggestion really that they taste as good as the old ones, let alone better IMHO

Some will say home guard but I have never found any to beat Charlotte. If you can’t eat a new potato raw it’s no good.
Unfortunately most of the “new” potatoes I’ve seen over the past few years in supermarkets have been June/July harvested with set skins and have been in cold store for 10 months.

@JLLM btw, I had some news from CK’s on Sunday and they were the best i’ve had in years!

Used to grow first early Vanessa in the garden ,,drought tolerant and good crop ,very tasty,,dont see them anymore
exactly my point- we were the last field scale buyer of Vanessa seed, we didn't have to try and sell them they sold themselves.....so they were dropped off the list, gone into history with no "early" red to replace them. Plenty of very pretty reds with no taste for packing though.

Probably Rocket if they were Graham's, not known for flavour but loosing their tops in that wind would have settled them down a bit. I agree with you about Charlotte, not a real early though.

This is my issue with most varieties of potato and veg!

We grew Vanessa commercially because they tasted beautiful. Ufortunately they had a limited market as, being pink, merchants said that they were not red enough to be sold as reds.
The other issue was that they were bad for getting blight.

I'd recommend Ulster Prince or Ulster Sceptre as being worth a try. Great flavour and if you like a waxy textured new potato they are hard to beat in my opinion. Seed often sells out quickly though.

what sort of yields are people getting. My swift are averaging about 800g per plant. The first rocket was the same. this was lifting at about small egg size.
