Vets said only 6 month test if we have a reactor in radial test.
Apha say 6 month test whatever, guessing apha are correct.
We are in low risk area.
If the grapevine is correct the farm in question showed a homebred heifer at royal welsh Tb was picked up on post movement test, heifer slaughtered currently awaiting culture test to identify possible source. On whole herd test inconclusive picked up on second cow originating from Wales also slaughtered.
Apparently source may not be known until Feb.

That last sentence explains the confusion.

The second animal plus cultures stretch things out. So your own testing is a bit fudged until the source of the neighbour’s outbreak is confirmed. And that may take longer than the original 6 months, quoted.
I think. :( :scratchhead:

@matthew are you or your organisation in the ears of the powers that be or is it just a kangaroo court?

I’ve no idea, tbh.
Some of us including me, have been asked to participate in sham committees, but quite frankly, they are a waste of time. A political gesture, with decisions already made and on the road to implementation.

As for ‘in their ears’, I’m happy to be poking a sharp stick where the sun don’t shine. :)

Any tips on testing 3-5 month old calves

Watch running suckers down with mums as there is a huge chance of crushing, neck/leg breaking and general f ups. We divide ours up and run them through separate, still not easy but at least you can get in the crush with youngsters.

Agreed. I should have said, we do the same. Separate them off - no matter how much longer it takes.

Can I ask a question of those who ha e read this thread. The two animals we retested I am going to cull them. Would you sell or on farm remove ?

Wasn't one of the new control measures, that any animal reading I.R ,could only leave the farm direct to slaughter ?

"All IRs in the HRA and Edge Area (and in TB breakdown herds in the Low Risk Area) that have a negative result on re-testing will remain restricted for the rest of their life to the holding in which they were identified."

Copied from the TB Hub.

Had AH ring me yesterday 9 days after failing test that they would collect the 2 reactors 14 days after the test, he informed me that any excessively dirty cattle will have their compo reduced 50%! Do Abboitoirs penalise fat cattle that severely?!?

We made a very simple mini crush, just a gate at front, 2 six railed hurdles on side and attach to pen gates. Race needs to be narrow enough to stop them turning, push calf in, stand behind, jab through side rail, no need for yoke. We will use it from 42 days to 6 months when they are too wide to fit! Dairy bred heifers and steers.
