Hopefully all is now sorted, or will be shortly.
But whats the plan of attack it the new one goes hot, have you everything in place to totally loose the plot in front of the Teagle boys?
@shepherdess
I'd still be inclined to get a second opinion on the pto shaft setup (not from teagle though). If it goes bang again with a new gearbox then teagle understandably won't want to know.
Not suggesting you're doing something wrong but a different pair of eyes might spot something different. Doesn't need to be an engineer. Just an experienced tractor driver should know what they're looking at
Will do, got another/different dealership in area will get them to look then.
Nor can I mural but I'm no machanic, it's just what I was told by one of them, that the Greese heats then breaks down and weares the bearings till they go bang, just relaying what I'm told
Not trying to be difficult ...............
But I never heard of the grease completely melting from a shaft joint, leaving it dry enough to fail.
Just maybe something we have not come across before, anythings possible.
So if we go with that explanation, if you greased the shaft more the shaft wouldn't have failed? How many hours would it roughly take for one to fail?
That's what we had started doing, greasing it every 4 hours or so, pita.
I'm not implying it is what caused them to go, just what I got told was a likely possibility causing it? The shaft connected to gear box was flipping hot too would make yellow pto guards black souround go like paper
Hard to say on time it took, each time was different circumstance, first few we weren't greesing ot more than you could normally. Guess they were looking to cover all possibilitys first? No idea? Sometimes it would break one before it was that warm after not doing much but more often when been going few hours
Said it to the brother today (bit more experience than me), just in case we were missing something ..............
He mentioned when stopping is the free wheeling clutch letting it run on when the tractor stops the shaft?
But I'm sure it is ......
Hopefully the new gearbox will do the job
Even running at full power constant would not cause the shaft yokes to heat up,
unless, the alignment was wrong.
shaft too long and bottoming out at some point of drop or lift
shaft not sliding freely
If you were nearer I would call and have a look myself!
I have known some dairy farmers (no offense meant to all dairy farmers!) who don't know what a grease gun is and wouldn't have all the grief you have had with this topper!
As @Mursal says I have never heard of heat doing this damage to a pto shaft.
If it is somehow melting the grease then it may be an idea to use high melting point grease however It's just not right for a gearbox to run that hot.
Just picked up a new Teagle PTO from dealer that looks heavier than the original one have lowered roller to alter angles(advised by visiting technician) so we'll see what happens no offer of new gearbox here
