Teaser rams?

I’m going to go the route of teaser rams this year to try and make lambing more compact. Will 3 be enough for 300 ewes? My vet is going to do 3 ram lambs for me next week or should I source older rams? Also how soon before hand do the teasers go out?

1:100 is about right. Usual advice is to vasectomise older/yearling rams, so no idea if ram lambs will work for this year. I would guess they would, IF they are sexually mature enough in time. If they are a May born runt then they’re not likely to be much good before next year, obviously.

I have used 45kg ram lamb teasers before. In my case they worked out perfect. It is really the smell that gets the girls cycling. The girls just need to be within about 1 meter of the teaser for a period of time and once a few start to cycle others will quickly follow.

I pull the teasers on day 18. At that point I put in the tups.

What is your current lambing cycle now? I believe that as long as the ram lamb has the right amount of libido 1 per 100 ewes would be fine. I expect my ewes to lamb with in 30 days. They do with a teaser present. Most of them lamb within 21 days.

I usually flush the ewes mid August and change to good grass then let in the rams 4th of September but find only a handful get tipped in first 10 days hoping to thighten it up a bit

You'll need to be quick, I was told to wait at least 6 weeks from the op to put the teasers in.

I got three lambs done first year I tried it and don't think they were as effective as the two shearlings done the following year, although none of the originals lasted long so maybe they were a poor selection anyway. Also, would be lucky if they averaged 40kg when they were done so maybe not a fair comparison.

Use the best tup lambs to get cut for teasers the biggest singles usually. I tup a few ewes with the suffolk x char tup just for teasers. Because they are in breeding mode sooner. April born tup lambs get cut in september.

Got a mongrel lamb here. Missed one Texel x Mule ram lamb with the burdizzo last year so decided to have him as a teaser. Weaned the ewes and one Mule had blown a quarter. After the lamb’s op decided to chuck him in with the culls as they’d be going soon. Anyway took months for this particular ewes’ quarter to drop off. Went to get her to go to the mart in the spring and she had a lamb. There had been enough in the teaser’s pipes to get her in lamb. Looked up her tag and she was his mother. Amazingly though she had milk in the remaining quarter, despite living off moss and bark all winter. Like Fred Karno’s Circus here sometimes honestly…

Having had him sire a lamb, will you have him tested before he goes near your donor ewes? Or just hope he was clearing his tubes?

I guess you might have some Bonny headed Texel lambs to sell next year if it all goes wrong. Maybe you could call them ‘crossing type Texels’?😂

he ran with the ewe lambs on tack over winter so I think he’s safe, although I do recall a local breeder thinking a number of his embryos had mysteriously doubled at scanning time before they came out x Zwartble at lambing…
